As a UWM student you have access to the books that are held at our 13 UW system schools
and their libraries. Let's look at how you can request items from
other libraries in the UW system. Let's say a professor recommended the book,
Let's Get Free: A Hip-Hop Theory of Justice by Paul Butler for one of my upcoming papers.
I'll start by entering the title into the Search @ UW search box
on the library homepage and hitting "go."
You can see, the default search results will include
a variety of materials from all of the UW campuses.
My particular list of search results includes many items with the words "Let's Get Free"
in the title. But, none of them are the book that I am looking
for; I've got a lot of articles here. So, what I can do is limit my search results
using these faceted search options on the left hand side of the screen.
I can limit by different categories, such as, what campus the item is located on, or
the resource type. I know that what I am looking for is a book,
so I am going to limit my search by books. Here's the book I'm looking for,
Let's Get Free by Paul Butler. I can use this "Locations" tab to check which
UW campuses have a copy of the book that I can borrow.
You should note, that because I am looking for books in the UW system, I don't need to
use the "Find It" tab, which is for requesting items not available in UW libraries.
I don't see any copies of the book that I want here in Milwaukee,
but there are a couple in Madison, one at Oshkosh,
and another at the Colleges Fox Valley Stacks.
I also should check to see that the books are available in a physical format, as online
books can't currently be loaned between libraries. The fact that the books have a call number,
and a physical location listed in the entries tells me that they are physical books that
I should be able to borrow. I can see that not all of the copies are currently
available. A couple of them have been checked out. But there are two that I can try requesting
right now. So what I am going to do is click on this
plus Icon to expand one of the available entries, come over here, underneath "Request Options"
and click the "sign in to request" link.
You can sign in using either your ePanther ID, or your 11 digit campus ID number.
Now that I have logged in, I can expand the entry for the book that I want one more time,
and I should see that under "Request Options"
it now says, "UB Request." So, I am going to click that link,
and now I can fill out the request form using these dropdown menus.
First, I select the library that I want the item to come from, so, in this case, UW Oshkosh.
Then I check the other drop-downs to make sure the information looks correct.
I'm going to click the "Create UB Request" button.
It says that my request was successful.
I can expect it to take 2- 3 business days the book to arrive. When it comes I'll receive
a notice in my UWM email account, letting me know that the book is ready to be picked up.
