My name is Louise Miller; I'm the group HR Manager for the Deritend Group.
The Deritend Group have chosen Loughborough College to send their Apprentices, really
because traditionally our business is electrical and mechanical engineering. Loughborough College
is the only facility in the UK to provide the Apprenticeship and the Training we require
and this is through the association of the AEMT.
How has the apprentice scheme helped Deritend? What the company has noticed, with regards
to the apprentices since they've been in attendance at Loughborough College is their confidence
levels have really gone up. From the beginning of their employment in the company, they were
very nervous, very young; it was their first experience of the work place, to now coming
back from the block release at Loughborough to become fully confident young men, asking
various questions of the skills engineers. They know more what they are talking about
and therefore have the confidence to question what they see on the workshop.
How has the scheme helped the apprentices? Both the apprentices have adapted really well
to the block release set up that is place through Loughborough College. They've been
luck and they've been housed together, which I think has given them that little bit more
confidence and reassurance. Being away from home they really are growing into young adults,
thoroughly enjoying it and making lots of friends.
What has working with Loughborough College been like?
The support links that we receive from Loughborough College go above and beyond what's required,
or certainly from previous experience that I've had through apprenticeship programs.
We get full information in advance, with regards to their accommodation, the facilities, the
transport arrangements to get them too and from college, including small details like
parking, which is all really useful for the lads, especially in the first few terms at
college as well. I continually get contact from the staff at
Loughborough College to give me updates on how the Apprentices are performing. I'll also
get prompts to remind me when their next block release is coming up, so we're fully informed
at all times. Will you use the scheme again for apprenticeships?
The Deritend Group will certainly use Loughborough College in the future for many more apprentices.
In my experience and my time with the Deritend Group, managing the apprenticeship program
Loughborough College has gotten better over the past few years. It was always good, but
it's even more advanced in the service it provides to us. So we will certainly be sending
more apprentices. Peter Kumar, Deritend Group
My name is Peter Kumar. I'm the supervisor of the winding section in one of the branches
of Deritend, in Wolverhampton. The apprentice that is attending Loughborough
College: the first thing we have noticed is the health and safety, which he is very conscious
about, which is a big plus for the company that takes great care to protect its employees.
The other thing we have noticed since he's gone to college is that he's taken more interest
in the work we do, he's asking more questions and generally he is good to have around. Already
there are signs that going to college has changed his attitude towards what we do, which
is a big plus.
