Hi, I'm Tom LaRock, welcome to this month's edition of DFAS News.
The new year is almost here and you know what that mean, it's tax time.
We can't do your taxes for you, but we can make it easier and faster for you
to get the information you need to file.
Delivery of tax statements begins in mid-December with retiree 1099s
and continues through January with all customers receiving their W-2s and 1099s by January 31st.
The complete schedule is on our website, www.dfas.mil.
And remember, in all but a couple specialized cases where the statements
are not available on-line, you can retrieve your tax statements quicker if you use myPay.
Statements are posted on myPay the day they are released, so you don’t
have to wait days for snail mail delivery.
Retirees, here’s news for you… Are you checking your new monthly
electronic Retiree Account Statement (eRAS) yet? Your latest eRAS was
available December 1st.
The eRAS is a two-page document that summarizes your monthly pay,
benefits and deductions. It tells you what you can expect on the next pay date.
Understanding your eRAS is an important first step in managing your
retirement pay. And don’t forget, your annual Retiree Account Statements are also available on myPay.
Because you receive 13 payments this calendar year you’ll get two
annual Retiree Account Statements. One shows how the recent raise in
the Cost of Living Allowance will impact your pay and the other
shows how your pay is affected by the new Federal Income Tax Withholding rates.
You'll want to download both statements now! And speaking of 13
payments this calendar year, don’t forget,
retirees, your December pay will arrive a few days early due to a change in law..
Payments normally scheduled for January 3rd will be issued this year on
December 30th.
Have you recently lost a loved-one? To ease the burden on grieving
family members and friends – we recently added a new method for
reporting the death of a military retiree.
Rather than calling customer service, survivors can now report a death
online - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For detailed instructions,
please see our "Report a Retiree's Death" page on DFAS.mil.
And finally this month… Sometimes a civilian permanent change of station
involves the sale and/or purchase of Real Estate.
If you’re a civilian PCS customer filing a travel voucher that involves
the sale or purchase of real estate, it’s important to make sure all
required information and documents are included. AND the voucher must be signed to ensure timely payment.
Get more info on this from the Traveler’s Checklist on dfas.mil.
Thanks for watching DFAS news. From all of us at DFAS, we’re proud to
serve America’s heroes. Thank you for your service and we wish you and your families a safe and happy holiday season.
