We started this in about 1995 to help
students who would probably not eat between exams,
and from that it has grown into a beautiful social event where we get
hundreds students coming in now.
We have several who helped organize to pick up the food for us
and we have those form maintenance to set up the tables and the faculty members who will come to serve the students, so
it's a cross campus enterprise if you will.
Well of course, Rocky Paquet is a big guy who does all the cooking for us.
Well about six years ago
Fr. Charlie asked me to give him a hand. I just came about and I said "Well Father, I know how to make chili."
And he said "You do?" and I said "Yeah"
"I can give it a try."
So that's what I did, and Fr. Charlie,
that's what we did,
we gave it a try.
It's been going good ever since and it's been getting bigger every year. Well we also have baked potatoes here today,
and like I said, hotdogs and chili and chicken pasta
and all kinds of juice, and rolls.
This event builds community because we're a small campus first of all,
get to know each other,
the different faculties
will come together here
both in terms of students, in terms of the faculty who are serving our tables. Yeah, they're in examination time
but you can hear them now, they're laughing
they're talking
they're smiling with each other. At one time you used to get some
taking their books with them. You don't see any books anymore.
They just come to have a good time
and to talk to one another.
So I think it's a good spirit builder, if you want to call it that.
The reason this is important to me is because it's students.
I mean this their place. They really enjoy the food,
and it's a nice relaxing atmosphere for them
and to see the happy faces it's just great.
The students really appreciate it and it's the first two days
of exams
and they think it's just awesome to come in here and get a free meal.
I became chaplain in 1997
and initially I'd be dealing with,
for one day,
maybe
35 to 50 students,
but then
for the last five years it has grown so much. I anticipated maybe 150 to 175 students.
We're well over 225 students today.
I hope I have enough for tomorrow.
