>> DR. MICHAEL: I'm pretty much ready for the new semester. The syllabus is almost ready.
I'm going to use a couple of things I learned today and make some minor changes, but I'm pretty much ready to go.
>>DR. AMIN: I feel pretty ready.
Having the session today was very very helpful.
Particularly in terms of thinking through evaluation techniques,
and how to make sure that I give regular, consistent feedback
to my students throughout the semester.
So I feel pretty ready.
>>DR. TAYLOR: The biggest challenge with working with freshmen
is getting the high school mentality out of them and getting the
college mentality in them and getting that this is your
responsibility, that your mom is not there to wake you up in the
morning or anything, you have to do everything on your own.
It is your responsibility.
And that includes coming to my class and getting assignments
done on time and that is one of our biggest challenges.
>>MRS. TAYLOR: Yeah, I would say in one word "motivation."
I think in high school, there's all kinds of motivators,
little motivators, built in that are not here at a college level.
So getting them motivated and especially self-motivated, I think is the biggest challenge.
>>DR. ROBINSON: The biggest challenge I think Is remembering where they are in life.
Trying to get in to their mindset as they mention today in this discussion.
These students are very often, overwhelmed and excited,
scared to death, and just very interested in finally being here.
It is easy to getting into the mode of teaching as if they know exactly what they are doing.
Which is what you assume later on, and maybe you shouldn't.
And I have to constantly have to remind myself that they are
truly learning how to learn.
And I always need to keep that in mind as I am teaching.
>>DR. MICHAEL: I think the biggest challenge for me is, trying to
strike a balance between content, and getting the students ready for college.
By that I mean there's a lot of time that has to go into
getting them up to speed on how they have to study, and how they get all their electronic resources,
and some of that time, I really need to spend on the material of the class.
And it's a difficult thing to balance those two things with true freshmen.
But once they're second semester freshmen, that doesn't become so much of an issue.
>>DR. AMIN: I'm really excited about implementing in my large LBST courses,
online reflective writing assignments in between class meetings,
so in between our class sessions, I've decided to develop some inquiry-based,
online writing assignments that I will be doing with the students as a way to gauge
how they are managing to master the content,
helping them to be reflective about their own progress as students,
and also really getting them to understand the relevance of the content to their lives
and experiences in the world.
>>DR. MICHAEL: I'm excited to get the students more active in terms of using their class time
and I think it's just going to be a totally different experience for them
as opposed to students who have been in the course in previous semesters.
>>MRS. TAYLOR: Clickers.
>>DR. TAYLOR: Well, we're gonna be starting with clickers this semester.
I'm excited, nervous, watch it screw up because I can guarantee you I'm gonna do something wrong there.
But that's okay, my students know me and know that I'll screw it up but I'll somehow fix it at the end.
But again we will continue with the Panopto, I think that was a great help, our students will really love that,
but we are gonna try clickers this year and try to get that group work
especially with these 150 plus classes to get them all to work together.
>>MRS. TAYLOR: Yeah, that's my new thing.
One new thing each semester, and this semester is clickers.
>>DR. ROBINSON: I love the syllabus quiz idea. I thought that was great.
Again, I'm tired of going over every last little bit of the syllabus.
Boring for absolutely everyone, and I like making them accountable for actually having read it.
So I'm absolutely going to do that.
I'm trying to think what else is brand new. A lot of this stuff I've been doing already,
but it's nice to be reminded that it really matters.
