The networkingdays function in Excel allows you to determine how many working days there
are between any two dates. So, for example, here we have a start day (1 Jan 09) and an
end date (31 Dec 09) and there are a number of listed public holidays. To use the networkdays
function, you activate the function wizard, it is in Date and Time and you must highlight
networkdays, click ok. What you’ll see is that it will ask me when is the start date,
so click the cell with the start date. It asks for the end date – click the cell with
the end date. For the holidays highlight the cells containing the list of holiday dates.
Click ok and you will see there are 251 work days between the two dates, taking into account
the list of holidays. If, for example, you remove 4 of the holidays from the list, you
will see that Excel will adjust for the number of public holidays now in the list and will
show a new number of working days. It is also important to note that if these public holidays
fall on a Saturday or Sunday –it won’t be excluded in the networkingdays tally – so
Excel does take into account if the holiday is on a Saturday or Sunday.
