I have been saved for over 82 years! I was 10 years old when
I asked Jesus to come into my heart. He did, and He has been
there by His Spirit ever since and will be until He leads me through
one of the twelve pearly gates into heaven, and then I will walk
with Him personally through all eternity! Can you imagine it?
I just praise His Holy Name for saving my soul and making life
purposeful. Making my life purposeful, that's the key to
joyous living. I have been living for over 92 years and am excited
about life. Why? Because I have a purpose for living! And so do
you, if you know Jesus. Oh, you may not be hobbling around as
I am, you may be bed-ridden or confined to a wheelchair, or as
free as a bird in the breeze, but that doesn't matter because we
all have a purpose in life, and it is the SAME purpose. The writer
to the Hebrews spells it out in the tenth chapter. He lists five
things that give us purpose for living. Verse 22 he tells us to
"draw near to God with a sincere heart." That is, just be honest
with God, if you have fears, tell Him about it. If you have
sorrows, or loneliness, or discouragement, tell it to Jesus!
Just to talk to Him changes everything, I know from
experience. There is purpose in life when we walk it with the
Savior. Verse 23 tells us to "hold fast to the hope we profess." By
that, I take it to mean that we don't doubt or question God, we
just know He loves us, we know we have asked Him into our
heart, we know He holds us in His hand, we know He will never
leave us or forsake us, so we dwell on those thoughts, we hold
onto them as dear life, and it results in a purpose for living.
Then in verse 23 God tells us to "spur each other on to love and
good works." That is precisely what I am trying to do right now,
I am trying to encourage all of you to "hang in there" to "never
give up" to "fight the good fight". We need to "spur" each other,
in a kind, loving way, encourage one another. That's a good
reason, or purpose, for living! Verse 24 tells us to "continue
meeting together for encouragement". First, and
foremost, God is telling us to go to church. I knew an old man out
in Western South Dakota who, 80 years ago, would say he
was going to church "come hell or high water". I'm not sure
what he meant by "hell or high water" except that he was going
to church no matter what. If you can't get out, or if there's not a
true church preaching the Word of God near you, then get some
other Christian and read the Bible and pray together. Finally,
verse 25 tells us to strive harder "as you see the Day approaching".
The Day meaning the return of Jesus—keep on the firing line
until Jesus comes again or takes you home. So, brother, sister,
lift up your head, stand tall in your spirit, there is a purpose in
life for every one of us!
