BEACH!

(ON CAM) MCU HELLO AND WELCOME TO VBTVíS ACCESS VIRGINIA
BEACH, A PROGRAM THAT INFORMS YOU OF NEWS AND EVENTS FROM AROUND OUR CITY AND SCHOOLS...
IíM MIKKI ACEDO, THANKS FOR JOINING US!
(Anchor On Cam) OTS Well, winter has definitely blasted into Virginia
Beach! Typically the mercury hovers around the mid 50ís for the month of December but
record lows combined with a recent storm have left the city covered in a blanket of whiteÖ
(VO) The recent ìflurryî of activity had drivers
scraping off cars and left many students with a rare snow day! Once the snow stopped falling,
totals around the city were only a couple of inches but it was enough to leave drivers
with a big, slushy mess on their hands. And just a quick reminder for the kidsÖthe ice
may look inviting, but stay off ponds or canalsÖalthough they may be frozen, the ice is not thick enough
to support the weight of even a small child.
Just because snow isnít a common occurrence here doesnít mean the cityís unprepared.
In fact, when it comes to inclement weather the Department of Public Works has a plan
in place.....hereís Access Reporter Lindy Fay with more.
(From AV 395410)
SOT 3:02-3:15 Mark Gemender, Operations Engineer, Public
Works ìThe first thing we do is check our inventories
and make sure we have enough material on hand to treat the storm. Then we monitor the news
to find out just how bad the storm is going to be.î
When winter conditions do hit our area, crews work hard to the clear the streets, safely
and quickly.
SOT 47-58 ìWe have a snow removal plan which basically
breaks the city into four sections and we prioritize the streets in those sectors based
up volume of traffic and volume of speed.î
The goal during any snowstorm is to have main arteries passable for emergency vehicles.
SOT7:29-7:58 ìWe have our prioritized list of roads that
include 720 miles of primary roads that need to be addressed up front and 400 miles of
lesser priority roadways but none the less we wonít stop until those are cleared. It
takes a huge effort and requires a lot of coordination.î
keep in mind, residential streets are not cleared by the city.
SOT 5:09-5:25 ìIf we did get into the neighborhoods, there
are always parked cars on the curb, we would always be windrowing snow on driveways which
would inhibit people from getting out and the city just doesnít have the resources.î
The landscape management DIVISION OF parks and recreation is responsible for shoveling
and salting all municipal buildings throughout the city, including public schools.
The highway division of public works has about 30 trucks that are equipped with spreaders
or plows.....vdot is responsible for clearing the interstates and ramps.
Old Man Winter is obviously making his presence known, and for many that means cold mornings
and even colder vehicles. But before you start up your car and head back inside while it
warmsÖ the police department wants to remind you that there are some scrooges out there
who will drive off with your car. Hereís this monthís crime prevention tipÖ
During the month of November and October more than 100 automobiles were reported stolen
in Virginia Beach and in almost half of those cases, the owners had left their keys in the
vehicle.
And all this cold weather isnít just affecting usÖ.itís affecting our four legged friends
too!
(VO) Stranding Center Tape # 3959 Rapid water temperature drops along the Atlantic
Coast have led to widespread turtle strandingsÖ. Sea turtles have been washing up along the
shores, suffering from a type of hypothermia called ìcold stunning.î The Virginia Aquarium
Stranding Response Team is leading the rescue effortÖso if you see one of these animals
stranded on the beach, call 437-6159. Eleven percent of the community is considered
disabled and thatís a number that will continue to grow as citizens get older. The city of
Virginia Beach is committed to providing services to those disabled but they canít do it without
the help of many volunteers.
NATS 50:09 - 12 Mayor presenting award
And as a way of saying thanks to those selfless volunteers, the Mayorís Committee for Persons
with Disabilities recently held their annual awards program.
SOT 36:15 ñ 26 Linda Johnson, Chair, Mayorís Committee for
Persons with Disabilities ìThis honors people who have committed to
working with people with disabilities in some way. Either theyíve made an impact in someoneís
life or theyíve impacted the community as a whole.î
In all, four groups were honored for their hard work including the Barker family, who
has donated countless hours to SkillQuest, a program that provides training and support
services for adults with intellectual disabilities.
SOT 40:08 - 21 Anne Barker, Received Award
ìMy husband and I have always volunteered since our sons were small, as they became
adults and they went into skillquest services we continued to volunteer.î
The annual program is a small way to give back to those who make a difference.
SOT 41:56 ñ 42:08 Sandy Hart, Received Award
ìThis is a great honor for my husband and I, we feel very honored in doing this. We
like to volunteer when we can.î
(Anchor On Cam) MCU Members of the Committee are appointed by
the Mayor, their meetings are open to the public and are held every 3rd Thursday of
the monthÖ.log on to vbgov.com for more information.
WHILE MANY YOUNGSTERS WERE BUSY WONDERING WHAT THEYíD BE GETTING FOR CHRISTMAS, STUDENTS
AT LANDSTOWN HIGH SCHOOL WERE BUSY GIVING THIS HOLIDAY SEASONÖ
NATS 27:25 It was controlled chaos in the cafeteria at
Landstown High SchoolÖ
SOT 29:25 - 29 ìIím putting food and cans in this bag for
the food drive.î
As hundreds of students created a sea of helping hands to fill the stomachs of the hungry during
the schoolís eleventh annual community service project.
SOT 32:54 ñ 33:04 Claire Mahoro, 10th Grade Student, LHS
ìWeíre here for operation blessing, weíre filling up the bags for people for the holidays
and LHS loves this, they do it every year.î
FROM MACARONI TO SWEET POTATOES....THOUSANDS OF POUNDS OF FOOD WAS PACKAGED FOR THE NEEDY.
SOT 32:02 ñ 10 Eldon Valery, 10th Grade Student, LHS
ìThey had peas, green beans, cookies, and all different types of stuff.î
AND THANKS TO SOME HARD WORK FROM THESE STUDENTS...MORE THAN 500 LOCAL FAMILIES WILL RECEIVE A BAG
OF FOOD FOR THE HOLIDAYS.
SOT 37:42- 50 Malyssa Rekos, Senior, LHS
ìDuring the holidays itís all about family and knowing that people care and it shows
that our community cares.î

Welcome back to Access Virginia Beach, Iím Mikki Acedo. Virginia Beach has been in the
tourism business since the 1800s and it has continued to grow each yearÖrapidly becoming
one of the East Coastís most popular tourist destinations.† And although tough economic
times have had an impact on the trade nationwideÖour city recently received some good news.
Jim Ricketts, Director, Convention & Visitorís Bureau
6:09:09.03 we had had a record summer in terms of lodgingÖ
6:09:42.02 Öand a 9.6 percent overall increase.
Tax receipts also showed increases in other city-wide revenues: restaurant sales, amusement
sales, participatory sports and retail sales. But attracting business in the winter months
help to make the city a year-round destinationÖ
Jim Ricketts, Director, Convention & Visitorís Bureau
6:10:31.19 we have been very fortunate becauseÖ 6:11:03.03 Öobviously enjoy that type of
business.
Hoteliers at the resort are hoping the increase in taxable lodging will promote another successful
seasonÖ Jim Ricketts, Director, Convention & Visitorís

industry.
(ANCHOR ON CAM) MCU Perhaps not visible on the surface, but one
huge benefit created from tourism?† Jobs... More than eleven thousand jobs are created
because of the tourism industry.
At the end of the school day, most students take the bus home to their families, but unfortunately
for a growing number, this is no longer an option because they have no place to call
home. In fact, during the last school year, nearly 500 students were homeless in Virginia
BeachÖthe school division recognizes there is a problem and offers many solutions.
Gay Thomas, Coordinator, Social Work Services, VBCPS
2:47:25.11 One of the primary things we are going to do isÖ.
2:47:36.26 Östudents who arenít homeless.
Legislation mandates that homeless students have the right to attend their school of originÖthe
school divisionís Social Work Services Department steps in to help.
Gay Thomas, Coordinator, Social Work Services, VBCPS
2:51:46.21 With school social work services I haveÖ

Gay Thomas, Coordinator, Social Work Services, VBCPS
2:54:50.05 where Seton Youth Shelters come inÖ

service that is provided.

the sheltersÖ 2:50:32.09 Öreally work on their school work.

taskÖand most definitely, a worthwhile one.
