“Why is Participant Direction Important?” Kevin J. Mahoney
Director, NRCPDS “You’d be amazed how creative people are,
you know, when they can just step back and you know, think about themselves. Okay, take
the easy ones. They can hire whomever they want: a family member; a friend; a neighbor.
You know, we’ve had an example of like a father whose son had major disabilities, wasn’t
going to live more than a year. He was able to leave his job and spend the time caring
for his son. We’ve had neighbors, that because most people don’t need the four hour blocks
of care that some agencies have to deliver. They need a half an hour here, a half an hour
there. But people can also buy, use… it’s the same amount of money that an agency would
have spent on their behalf. So, they could do things like buy a range of good services:
they could renovate their homes; put grab bars in their shower. They could do a whole
range of creative things to meet their needs.”
