Successful offensive linemen are always thinking and so we come up with four W’s. The first
one is who, a lineman has to know who to block now there’s rules, there’s man count rules,
there’s gap scheme rules, there’s past protection rules but he has to know who to
block, that is the first thing there can’t be any mental errors as who to block. There’s
a saying, “A hat for a hat” as longest we have a hat for a hat we put our hat on
the defender's hat then we have a chance to have a successful play, if you don’t have
a hat for a hat so that’s when usually have a bad play or turn over or whatever. When
is the second W, when is the ball being snapped; this is a snap count; this is the only ally
an offensive linemen has over the defense. He knows when the ball is going to move, the
defense has to wait for the ball to move, and so he has to get off on the snap count.
And this is of most importance of...this is my ally, I’ve got to almost get a jump on
the ball so I have to know when the ball is being snapped.
