I'm going to talk to you a little bit about some of the vocabulary that you will hear
on this college campus. An alert is what your professor puts in
whenever you have been absent from class, you have missed an assignment,
or you have failed an exam. It is usually
on your account for that semester that it occurs in.
As advisors we can see the alerts that you have. Please don't be embarrassed to
come in and see us when you have an alert. We're here to help you.
If you're not successful, we're not successful. Every freshman will
have to take a freshman year experience class.
In that class they will have an advising assignment where they will be required to
meet with their advisor.
They need to come to us, make an appointment.
you'll meet with us once to go over your goals, and then the second time
towards the end of the semester will be
to talk about if you've met them or not. I would advise students to
prepare before coming to see us. Make sure that you thought about at least
five goals: three academic, two personal,
and make them to where they're very specific. Know steps that you can take
to reach
each one. Holds are put on for not having your
immunizations turned in, parking tickets, library fees,
and unpaid balances. You will hear students
talk about having to have a registration access code to register for classes.
Some departments do require a registration access code.
Biology does not unless you are on academic probation.
The Undergraduate Catalog is the publication
of procedures and degree programs and it's located at www.catalog.uab.edu.

Class schedule is the published course offerings for the University
for that semester. Add/drop is the process of
adding or dropping a class. It's usually done within the first five to seven days
of the semester. The date is usually listed
on your course syllabus, as well as on the academic calendar.
When you add or drop a class
you will not be charged for this. Withdrawal is the process of withdrawing
from your classes
after the published date of add/drop.
You will be charged a portion of tuition for your classes that you withdraw
from
and a "W" will appear on your transcript. If you are on financial aid
for a long time
you will have to fill out a student academic progress
form for financial aid. So this is the document is provided to you by your
instructor
and it has in it the
course objectives, outcomes, as well as
assignments and exam dates, and any other information that is pertinent for the class.
Supplemental instruction is
offered for courses with a high D, F,
and W rate. Instructors would usually have
the days and times of supplemental instruction listed on the syllabus for
those classes.
Course forgiveness is the opportunity to retake the course
and have the better grade put in with your GPA. Course forgiveness can be done
four times. Whenever you do retake a class and you get a better grade,
what happened is the other grade is still listed
on your transcript, but it is not calculated in the hours anymore.
Academic standing is at minimum
a 2.0 overall GPA. Academic probation
happens when your GPA falls below
a 2.0. Academic warning is for first-time freshmen who comes in, and
in their first semester they did not make a 2.0,
so the next semester they are on academic warning.
Academic suspension occurs if on that second semester
they do not make a 2.0. An elective
is a course that is taken that does not count towards
the major degree program, but does count
in the 120 hours that's needed for the degree.
