>>CHAD SZYLVIAN: I think really the biggest thing that kind of affects Maine is the just
the geography. It’s tough for a lot of people to get care beyond the primary care level
if they even have primary care available. So I think there really has to be kind of
an increased effort and focus on preventative medicine and help people out before they have
to get to that level where they gotta be driving to Boston.
>>AMANDA CALL: Even though Standish is about a half hour away from Portland, at most of
the times, if people want to see a specialist or in any emergency situation, you have to
travel a half hour, forty-five minutes into Portland. I feel like bringing some specialties
or even more primary care in general to the area would be immensely beneficial.
>>CHAD: I just feel such a strong connection to going home and working in more rural areas.
I don’t like to look at myself as saving rural Maine, but I mean I think I’m certainly
part of the solution and just, I’m a homegrown product, so I’m excited to go back and use
my skills.
>>AMANDA: This is like the first MD program that’s through Maine and for Maine. It’s
just gonna really let us be able to be involved in improving health care in Maine overall.
I feel privileged to be to do that. I feel very lucky for even being chosen for this
>>CHAD: I think it’s really great for students involved because we talk amongst ourselves
and we all say this is exactly what I wanted out of my med school.
