This is Governor Steve Beshear ... About Kentucky.
As Governor, I’m excited to report that Kentucky’s exports reached a record high
in the first half of 2012 – growing nearly 8 percent to more than $10.7 billion.
The news comes from the U.S. Department of Commerce and is a very positive sign of Kentucky’s
growth and success in the global marketplace.
For example, Kentucky’s merchandise export sales outpaced our 2011 figures for several
nations including Austria, Sweden, Italy, Mexico, and Japan.
The merchandise categories Kentucky exports include transportation equipment, chemicals,
machinery components, computer and electronic products, and electrical equipment.
Kentucky’s export growth in the motor vehicles and parts sector grew more than 30 percent.
So did our beverage and spirits sector, which includes bourbon. Those numbers are especially
strong.
Our overall success is a direct result of several programs created to help businesses
leverage financing, grants, and other key resources to boost exports, which support
thousands of jobs across this Commonwealth.
We will continue to strengthen our focus on international trade activities at all levels
and work to improve those programs to encourage export growth by Kentucky companies of all
sizes.
The amount of exports is a key driver of economic growth in any state, and our ongoing success
in this area truly bodes well for Kentucky’s future.
