A former railwayman has been awarded £8,500 after suffering noise induced hearing loss
following years of work without suitable aural protection.
Aubrey Akers joined British Rail straight out of school in 1956 and stayed with the
firm until 1973, during which time he worked all over the business, sometimes in areas
where 300 machines were loudly operating at once.
Despite being aware of the dangers that noise could pose to workers as early as 1955, British
Rail didn't provide Aubrey with ear protection at any point during his career there. Instead,
his colleagues often had put pieces of cloth or rags in their ears to try and block out
the sound.
Aubrey's noise induced hearing loss claim was ultimately settled out of court, but many
of the men who worked in similar conditions could also be able to make a claim. Find out
