Hi, I'm Chris Adams from General Finishes. I'm going to show you today how to apply our
Gel Top Coat. This is a walnut table top, and I have two
coats of finish on it now. (Two coats of top coat.)
Under that is one coat of Java Gel stain. So I would like to knock down the finish a
little bit. I'm going to use a really old worn out sanding pad.
Sometimes I cut them off to go around the corners like this.
So, we'll just knock this down a little bit, going with the grain of the wood.
You see I'm sanding out a couple oily hand prints right there.
Just a light sanding all the way around.
Then wipe it down. You can see that I'm using Bravo paper towels.
They're my favorite application for wiping. You can buy the more expensive cloths in any
store, but these are recycled, they have an extremely
low texture so they don't cause a grain raise or a ripple in the finish.
That's handy to have in the house. So, I cleaned that up.
I've already stirred the stain quite a bit. This has a flattening agent to make it satin,
and that settles to the bottom. And you want to make sure it's stirred fully
through the can. I've taken one of the paper towels for application
and folded it over into a pad four times. And I'm just going to get it on the surface.
So I spread it across the entire surface, and then I take the pad and do the entire top.
You don't have to worry too much at this point
what direction you're going in. And you'll see that I have a lot of product
on here. I can write my initials in it.
So you want to keep it quite thick, always working section by section.
I'm just going to trim out these little edges here.
And then I'm going to make sure I have it all across the surface.
And then I'm going to take a clean pad, and I fold it over three times.
I'm going to gently wipe off the edge first. I'll come back to it again.
And just start feathering very lightly. It's really a polishing motion.
I try to keep my hands stable and flat.
Look over your piece to make sure you have everything just touched out the way you want.
Finish off the edges one more time.
And that's it! That's how you apply Gel Top Coat.
