Rea Wikaira has been awarded the ONZM
and Hori Te Awa has been awarded the MNZM
both for their services to Maori.
Here is a report on both these recipients.
A surprise honour.
Rea Wikaira is a long-time supporter of Maori health.
Perhaps his biggest achievement
was saving the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust
from the brink of extinction, raising it to the top of its kind.
This honour is not new to the Wikaira family.
His mother was appointed to the Queens Service Order.
She was one of the founders of the Maori Women's Welfare League.
Hori Te Awa has also contributed significantly to Maori well-being.
He has been the chairman of the Wahi Whanui Trust,
a trust that is responsible for service offered by Waikato-Tainui.
They both feel that the Kingitanga has inspired them to achieve.
And the honours that follow.
It is evident that these two have indeed got the job done.
Heta Gardiner, Te Karere.
