I get to the conclusion that in architecture and urbanism
processes one must connect with the local reality.
In other words, one must connect to the real people and
then start the transformation process of the city.
It is common at architecture that a professional designs
a project and ends up becoming its master
without acknowledging that that project should
serve the community. This reversal of values
where the community has to adapt to the architect’s project
is an authoritarian inheritance of the governments, scholars,
and professionals that has to be cleared away.
The urban structure of our city is essentially
of public space, right? In Rio de Janeiro
you walk on the sidewalk, there are street shops,
the bus stop is very close to your house.
It doesn’t mean all works perfectly,
but it is a city aimed at the people.
The core of this city, the entire center area,
the southern region, a large part of the northern region…
They are part of the city structured based on the belief
and decision that the street is a meeting point,
a place for social interaction.
I entered school thinking I would study Architecture,
would compose beauty, objects. But I increasingly see that
this was not right that I’m dealing with space, with people.
I’m learning a lot about Sociology, Philosophy, History,
having to base it all in the city itself. 30 00:03:05,000 --> 00:03:1x0,000 The city no longer looks back with longing.
I believe the future perspectives for the city of
Rio de Janeiro are much more interesting than our past.
However, we have to look back in order to achieve
this future with quality.
If you have a wrong model of public-private partnership
that people see was created to take away their money,
they won’t go there.
Plain and simple, they do not embrace that space.
Now, no matter what managing system it may be,
whether only public, private-public, or just private,
where people realize there is an exchange, that it has
been done for them, then there is a sense of belonging.
Both architecture profession and education
must be redefined. I believe we will have to
learn how to work in a more transdisciplinary way
we will have to learn how to work in teams.
Architecture is a powerful tool
to lead processes
and build spaces for mediation with other
professions and to co-work with other dynamics.
