"David Davis, Florida High School Principal versus Rainbows"
David Davis speaking: "On the t-shirt on the right that has a triangle and a rainbow running
through it or something. That appearance." Another speaker: "That says Pink Floyd on
it." David Davis: "Pink Floyd. That would be banned. Same thing with the apple situation
there." Speaker: "What about 'Reading Rainbow'?" David Davis: "Could possibly. I would investigate
to see it if has anything to do with the Gay Pride Movement or any other movement that
might hinder the educational process." Heather Gillman, Floridian High School Student speaking:
"Well, some of my friends, we were wanting to support gays and lesbians. And I wanted
to wear a shirt that said, 'I support gays.'" Christine Sun, ACLU Attorney speaking: "We
represented Heather in a lawsuit against her school district because the Ponce de Leon
Administration had banned all symbols showing support for gays and lesbians." Speaker to
David: "So is it fair to say that anything regardless of the context. Anything with a
rainbow on it is banned at PDL." David Davis speaking: "It could be." But while rainbows
were banned, another symbol didn't raise concern. "We have kids who wear shirts with confederate
flags on it as a... I believe they said it was a manufacturer who makes that clothing.
It has a confederate flag on it." After a trial in May 2008, the court ruled in Heather's
favor. Heather speaking: "Yeah, it was kind of scary because I didn't know what people
would think" The ruling affirmed students' First Amendment rights to talk about issues
of LGBT equality. "But then I figured who cares what people think. I'm standing up for
something that I believe in." Stand up and make a difference ay your school. aclu.org/getequal
