My name is Sudha Krishnan, and I am in the
Accountancy department in the College of Business.
I teach typically Financial Accounting, I teach intermediate
accounting and advanced. I read books, I cook a lot,
and I travel. That’s really what I do outside (of
teaching). Some of the travel is business-related, most of it
is fun-related, and then I try to combine the
business with a couple of things of fun- it’s nice. I
got my undergraduate degree in India, a masters
degree in India, a masters degree at USC, and a PHD
at USC. How do you acquire businesses, how do you
value business, how do you account for things? This
is really what we are doing. So I do a lot of reality-
based stuff in class; bring in as many real cases, do a lot of cases in class, things
like that. I come from USC and Loyola, both of
which are private schools. Most of the students
there, they have had the luxury of money to some
extent, maybe not like USC, but certainly they have some
money in their background. Here, the students work
hard - It’s unbelievable! Some have two jobs. I had
to make a few adjustments when I first came in, but
it was unbelievable how hard they can work. I get a
good mix here. I like the research, I like the
teaching, but I’m not too pro-research or pro-
teaching, so this was a good combination here. The business
world has changed enormously in the three years. We
now have what we call a new normal. What we
considered normal at one time doesn’t exist
anymore! The new normal requires people to sort of adjust
to a different way of living, looking for jobs
differently, and perhaps not finding jobs that easily. So, I
do a lot of trying to get people ready for interviews, I work with them on that
I also talk to the firms. I try to sort of connect
them in some ways and that is one way, work related,
the student work-related. The other aspect is, I have to
get myself updated a lot - because the laws change, the
rules have changed. There is a right way to do
things, and there is wrong way to do things. I cannot
force them into doing the right way, but they have
to judge it very appropriately based on their
circumstances. Read your stuff! After all, learning
through all this accounting, the whole idea is to read
the stuff and understand it. Do it! Apply it to your
life. Don’t just study it in class and just take off into the
real world, without applying what you learned.
