How do standards help protect the safety and well-being of Canadians?
You know that a product is safe by virtue of some combination of
who provides it, where you bought it, what you already know about it.
So, the standards process is a big piece of that exercise.
Something is manufactured according to a standard, it’s been put to a quality test,
people are subscribing to it, so it’s governing the manufacturing process in some fashion.
So, if you know something is a product of a standard or a business that is governed by a standard,
then you have a better chance of trusting it and trusting its quality.
Standards are a bit of a shortcut to knowing that goods, services, suppliers or a portion of the marketplace
has been put to a scrutiny by those who are involved with it and, bestow a kind of trust or confidence in the outcome.
How can I have a say in standards development?
You can volunteer to be involved in the standards process very directly.
You can be involved in the development of a standard.
Most standards are also put out for consultation.
I think it’s getting involved in standards opens up new worlds and new interests
and you would be surprised as you move along that path how much you learn.
