Hello friends, welcome to my youtube channel
I'm Eduardo Boticario and I'm here to offer you a new lesson.
This time we will talk about the cumbia.
Why talk about cumbia?
Because it was my birthday recently and my colleagues in the group
"A través del espejo" bought me tiger pajamas.
A full body tiger pajamas.
And laughingly told them
them I was going to do a class tiger dress of.
Then I started thinking about how to do to justify
the tiger pajamas,
playing drums.
Watching a soccer match Atletico de Madrid,
I am a fan of Atletico de Madrid.
Falcao scored goal and i said,
I have it! Falcao is the "tiger",
the best forward of the moment.
I said, that's it, I wear the pajamas tiger
to make a tribute to Falcao.
Where is Falcao?
Is Colombian.
What is typical of Colombia?
The Cumbia ... there you go!
As not was a base of cumbia that had no copyright to use it freely,
I have been obliged to compose a cumbia base.
It is very short, one-minute,
just enough so you can see what we will learn in class today.
I know I will not win a Grammy,
but for what I use, it serves. Here we go!
Do you think the cumbia of the tiger?
I know I will not win the Grammy, but hey,
, there is my little tribute to the great player he is Falcao.
Let's get down to business.
The cumbia is formed by the interaction of the three cultures
that inhabited the area of Colombia and Panama.
On the one hand we have the Indians indigenous to the area
on the other side were the Spanish who colonized the area and
and finally the African slaves brought to America by Europeans.
What each culture contributed to cumbia?
The rhythm and dance was provided by African culture.
The melody was provided by the Indian culture.
The lyrics was provided by European culture, in this case, Spanish.
Today, the modern cumbia has spread throughout South America because
it is a very danceable and cheerful music.
. It has been widely accepted.
There cumbias in almost all countries of South America and Central America. In Mexico too.
At present, the cumbia is played with all kinds of instruments.
Was introduced electric guitar, bass, brasses ... has been merged with different genres like funk and jazz.
Well, to learn to play cumbia, as always, I say, we must go to the basics.
We have to start analyzing the rhythm, studying their origins.
See where it comes from and how we can make an adaptation
of a rhythm which originally had no drum set, because drums set did not exist.
See how we can take that rhythm and adapt it to the drum set.
For this we look at the basic rhythms of cumbia instrumentalists play
The own cumbia instrumentation about percussion refers is composed by several drums.
The main one is the "llamador"" who is responsible to keep the rhythm.
The "llamador" would be this.
. It is a small drum that sets the rhythm of the song.
It does this off-beat.
The main rhythm of the llamador would be this.
An adaptation of the rhythm of the llamador to play it on our drum set could be next.
The maracas, also called Maracon because it's a quite large maraca.
They also play guache, a type of shaker within him seeds
or pieces of any material that can be shaken.
The basic pattern of maraca, was next.
Then we have the "Tambora". It is the only one with two heads.
One on each side. And played with drumsticks hitting body and head
The tambora is responsible to set the rhythm hitting wood and provide the bass, because it is the largest drum.
It is responsible for provide the bass, the bass rhythm.
For the tambora I chose two patterns are the most common, typical and simple.
The first, as I have no tambora, I'll play on the floor tom. Is as follows.
The second would be this.
And now let's see their adaptations. How can we implementing it in the drum set.
Another drum would be
The alegre is another African drum that is a mixture of djembe and conga.
It is a hybrid of the two. It is played with the hands.
It is responsible of "soloing". Play a little "ad libitum".
Accompanies, playing, to the melody.
The implementation of the alegre on drum set would be: Plays breaks, fills according what melody and music.
Now let's see how we can take all these individual rhythms and put them together to create a drum beat.
. I chose two basic ways to play cumbia that I put below. After the basic rhythms we go complicating it.
We are going to enrich the basic rhythm of cumbia.
Once you've seen how to play the basic rhythms, we will be adding variations.
The first variation is to replace the cross stick's.
We will play in drumheads playing llamador's part . It would sound like this.
Another variation would be .... Play the maraca's part with hi-hat
llamador's part with the left hand.
We added with the left foot on a temple block cross stick's part that we have replaced earlier.
With the right foot we play the kick drum, with the left foot we play the temple block.
The right hand maraca's part. The left hand llamador's part Would be as follows.
Now we play the same rhythm replacing hi-hat's part by a cowbell.
This is good to open the rhythm when the chorus.
It is good to release the hi-hat and go to cowbell, which has more sonority, to launch more the chorus.
The fourth alternative would add, with the left hand, another tambora pattern on toms. Would look like.
Another alternative that I propose would do a rhythmic pattern off-beat on-beat and playing with all the drumheads.
We look for a melody that we like. Would look like.
Another variant for moments of chorus. Would be, as I said before,
play güiro or maraca's part with the cowbell.
With your left hand hold llamador's pattern
With the kick drum play the bass of the tambora.
And what we do now is put aside the temple block and focus on the hi-hat's.
Let's play foot openings.
In this case, the first variation, we do openings on-beat, in strong part of beat. Let's see it.
The last variation, that I propose is also to part chorus, to the strong part of the song.
It's the same system we've seen just now but, this time, the hi-hat plays off-beat.
. Open the hi-hat and closed it off-beat on-beat .
The rhythm would be as follows.
Well guys, that's all for today. I hope you find it useful
and you learn a little more of this musical genre which is quite sweet tasty and pretty rich
and enjoyed playing it because it is simple.
I know I will not win a Grammy for the song I've done
but at least it helped us to learn what it is and how to play cumbia.
A hug. See you.
