You know have to be a good scientist of course to be a good practitioner
But you’re also, you need to think about your patients in the context that they come to you
it’s useful to have a background as a practitioner
in thinking about all those different aspects of a patient’s life
and how a patients going to responding to a particular diagnosis or accepting a particular treatment
so I think that’s one major reason
is just having a background in psychology and sociology, economics, history and intercultural studies
all those things are really useful I for understanding the context that peoples health and wellness arises in
Recently there was a study published in the Journal of Science
about how reading literally fiction makes you more empathic
and I think that’s a testament to how you really need to be educated
in these different areas in order to become a good listener
You’re also up and put into a position where you’re having to make ethical decisions
and especially at the end of life
but also even about treatments that have impacts about an individual’s quality of life
And that really helps to have the background in philosophy and religion
and sort of think about so you can think about those ideas
Some of the things that you gain from the core you know aren’t really directly related to your career
they’re sort of related to your life
You know you can take a course called culture and art in America
and it really brings a new richness to the way you watch television
or view photography or go to an art museum
In a way that you don’t always get by sort of trying to access that on your own
so if you can understand the perspective of the artist
if you have had a little bit of training then
So I think it just enriches your life
so if you’re a physician or someone who’s working in a stressful, high-passed health care provision
environment you really you need to have those life skills
so that it really just enriches your life overall
when you’re looking to relax or enjoy your free time as well
