Hey guys, my name is Abraham from the page I love guitars (Page I used to contribute to)
And basically in my videos, we'll be focusing more on the aspects of Lead playing rather than the rhythm
Basically more ideas of sweep, tapping and all that stuff, not focusing too much on the rhythm guitar by now
But more on the lead guitar.
And
To begin, to give this column a nice start, my video will be
Teaching a lick on how to outline this chord that we got here
That is a A#maj7
And
We have our root, our third, our fifth and the seventh
And what we're gonna do to outline, we're gonna use tapping
but not the regular tapping on one string like
to which people are used to
but a tapping using our last three fingers (middle, ring, pinky)
and we're gonna use some string skipping as well
so
the first part, is basically this:
my apologies because i'm missing a string, but it won't be affecting at all the lick im going to show!
so what we have is, 7th fret of the D string, and the 8th fret of the D string as well.
and in the next string, the 3rd one, we have the 7th fret, and the 10th fret
and in the next string, the 3rd one, we have the 7th fret, and the 10th fret
and in the next string, the 3rd one, we have the 7th fret, and the 10th fret
now the tapping is, after the first two notes we hit, the D on the fret number 12
and when we pass on to the next string (the G) we're gonna tap the 14th fret and on the second part the 15th fret
now, when we play this part, this note here on the number 12 fret, this D, repeats on the next string
and it's one of the things that makes the lick sound a little bit more percussive
so the way you can do this is, you can do tapping how it fits you best, me personally, I use my second, third, and fourth finger so I can hold the pick with my index and thumb
so we basically have, 7 - 8 - 12 (with middle finger) , 7 - 10 - 14 (with ring finger) and then 15 with the pinky
and we repeat it two times
after we have that, we're gonna proceed to the string skipping and tapping part
and the notes are gonna be basically the same pattern from the beginning, 7 - 8 - 12, but we're gonna skip the G string
and we're gonna have 6 - 10 - 13 (with ring finger) and we'll have something like this:
same procedure on the tapping
middle finger and then the ring finger
and we're gonna do the same thing on the G string
so we have 7 -8 - 12 (middle finger) and then 6 - 10 - 13 (ring finger)
and that is how we will end the lick
so if we play it all together, we have:
now the end that I just did, you can do it on your own way. You can use a diferent pattern than me
because the idea is to finish on this note, the A#.
but the way you end the lick is depending on you, you can do it like I just did it. Which is basically 8 - 10 - 6 - 5 and slide to the 6
but is a hammer on from the 8th fret to the 10, a pull off, another pull of and then we slide from the 5th fret to the 6th.
so far we have this (slow)
the we do the string skipping!
then we do the string skipping! And on the next string
and if we do it fast we have
and you can also add if you want some slides in there
you can end it however you want
and that's it! This sounds better with a clean setting, you can do it with distortion but you have to be really careful when muting the strings.
you can also do what they call cheating (lol) and put a hair tie or something to damp the strings until you got the tapping part good, because it mutes all the unwanted noise that happens when you tap sometimes
it's something that Guthrie Govan does
the idea is that if it sounds good, go with it!
so we have that lick, outlining the A#maj7
and that's it!
one thing that's important is that when you're tapping from string to string
for example here:
when you're doing the same note, it's important that you practise muting those strings
because if you play the two notes at the same time, it would sound like this
and the idea isn't to sound like that, like a chord so to speak.
but rather very separate. To make it sound more like an arpeggio
but rather very separate. To make it sound more like an arpeggio
get it?
so that's something you need to practise!
if it sounds like this, you're doing it wrong
it has to sound one by one
and that's basically it
if you have any doubts you can ask in the comments section or send me a PM!
you can send me an inbox on my facebook too
and that's it!
see you next time folks!
