MAGGIE SOKOLIK: Welcome to College Writing 2x.
I'm Dr. Maggie Sokolik of College Writing programs at UC Berkeley.
Over the next five weeks, we'll be covering five different topics.
In week one, there will be a grammar review, especially as it relates to
written English.
Week two will address how to write effective sentences and paragraphs,
especially how to make them both clear and elegant.
Week three will focus on thesis statements--
how a craft them, what their components are, and how to recognize
them in writing.
During week three, you also began brainstorming for your final essay.
Week four will look at ways to develop a longer pieces of writing and how to
plan your essay.
It will also focus on writing good introductions and conclusions.
These are difficult for most writers.
Finally, in week five, we will present some techniques in self-editing,
proofreading, and revision.
You will also submit your final paper for evaluation.
There will be a lot of opportunity to practice writing throughout the
course, to take self-graded quizzes, to get feedback from your peers on
your writing, to interact with other classmates from around the world, as
well as with our course assistants and facilitators.
No textbooks are required.
But there are three recommended texts.
These are all ebooks, so you don't need to find a bookstore.
There will be a course-specific workbook which I have written.
This will be available online, and links will be provided in the course.
Another book called 50 Ways to Practice Writing by Dorothy Zemach and
published by Wayzgoose Press will be available.
Again, there will be links for this provided in the course.
We will also be using Pearson Writer.
This is an integrated online writing tool, with many
different useful elements.
Again, welcome.
We're really happy you're considering this course, and look forward to
working with you.
Thank you.
