hi Tom are in here I have a new book out it's called the crash a 20-16
available last 30-plus years we've seen this concerted effort politically
economically
intellectually to remake the United States in the image
these very very wealthy economic royalists to borrow franklin roosevelt's
praise
thus my book the crash in 2016 the plot to destroy America what we can do about
it
which is available in all fine bookstores now you can find out what is
the crash a 20-16 why that year
what is the role as conspiracy what we do to stop it what happens the United
States after 2016
and in the book is my letter to my great-grandchildren when I want them to
know
because previous crashes have given us this country and Norris opportunity to
progress
revolutionary war goes democratic self-government the Civil War put an end
to slavery
greater pressure were to built the American middle class so there's good
news here
we've done this before we've gotten better because these crashes
the crasher 2016
I'm ginger Venzke here for Thom Hartmann on the news
you need to know this on Tuesday the US Senate advance legislation to extend
long-term unemployment benefits
and all but six Republicans declined to vote for it
instead of helping to restore this financial lifeline to out-of-work
Americans
conservative lawmakers say that they are launching their
own plan to help the poor today Senator Marco
Rubio will deliver a speech marking the fiftieth anniversary of President Lyndon
B Johnson
war on poverty and he's expected to lay out the republican plan to fight
economic inequality considering this is the same party that wants to slash
food stamps subject welfare recipients to drug tests
and kick people off unemployment assistance it's hard to imagine how
their ideas will include
anything except for tax cuts for the rich in a video message previewing
today's speech senator Rubio asked
after fifty years isn't it time to declare big government's war on poverty
a failure but despite decades that republicans trying to slash the social
safety net the war on poverty
as actually been a success just days ago the New York Times released a report
showing that the poverty rate
would be twice as high without the government programs at the right
loves to hate republicans don't care about the war on poverty
it been waging war on the poor for decades their tax cuts and austerity
weren't so harmful to our nation
it would almost be laughable to hear conservatives talk about
helping the poor fact is poverty is no joke
in screwed news our cars and hamburgers are
even more toxic than we thought researchers at Oregon State University
have discovered that some
chemical reactions create toxins that are hundreds of times more dangerous
than their parent compounds
basically when chemicals found in car exhaust or grilled meat
mixed together they create new chemicals that pose a serious risk to our health
scientist
didn't even know these chemicals existed no one
are there we have no way to determine the health standards by which to measure
them
scientist are still working to identify the levels of these chemicals in our
environment and to determine their exact health risks

Seattle has sworn in a socialist Monday city council member

you're listening to bill Tom Hartman program
welcome the Thom Hartmann program it is media for the rest of us %uh my path
Antonio
wanted a showman have Sam cedar my partner in Ring of Fire wanna talk about
the GOP's
new empathy play I'm have James Kaufman
he's going to be talking about the new sweetheart deal the doja
just made with JP Morgan and some others bill moyers
come to us joshua Holland with bill moyers gonna be talking about to
how there is this divide taking place in this country
for a lot of different reasons that we haven't fought about he's going to talk
about that Zoe carpenter
from the nation's gonna talk about how congress needs to step up the fight
against poverty in where we are how we progress since LBJ
I'm not have her I'm I've got also with me fair in cousins
producer for Ring of Fire will be just chatting about the news the day
and I'm have tom snyder away brilliant doctor
talking about his new book a physician's apology
fair and it what what we're going to focus on today is lyndon baines johnson
understood that his war on poverty
was certainly design is a way for americans
to responsibly move into a part of her life with they could live with a little
bit dignity
but LBJ was also responding to the advice
talented economist talented sociologist
who educated LBJ on the idea that the way to build
a sustainable strong economy is to begin at the bottom and then grow upward in
other words
LBJ understood that when Americans living on the margins were
that individual is struggling to provide for food and shelter it for their family
place to live for the family
just women teachers trying to get by if you give them something
they put it back into the economy now
LBJ and advisers understood that the war on poverty was also in effect
a war to increase prosperity in this country
but then when the crazy train hit Washington DC mostly during the reagan
years intellectually dishonest conservatives
think tanks in in opportunists they came in they told the american public that
they had a new invention
they told america that their new invention was gonna turn
old worn-out notions above avi economics on its head
and that we're gonna see greater prosperity because of their new
invention that
big invention that big lie was called trickle-down economics
a small group billionaire inheritance baby she would never gone hungry a day
in their lives
are convinced the american media to sell the american public on the idea that if
we could simply give
insanely wealthy individuals wealthy corporations more money
that if we could give more money to that gray Poupon
billionaire crowd that they're gonna share their windfalls
with america's working poor and it's going to lessen the burden for taxpayers
that was the big pitch
now the truth ears that the american media
figured out that that was a lie that it was a trickle-down fraud they knew that
five years into the program
honest writers have been writing about what a liar was five years into the
program
but by the time the billionaire scam was in place
you had billionaires buying up the media so the trickle-down trash argument it
could be recycled day after day
in TV and radio in in in print but
as a matter fact this week we're saying this irresponsible corporate media
pitching the teabag Republican talking point that
that if we if we don't do something
to take money away from workers its gonna hurt the worker
that's their pitch listen carefully to what they're going to say
they're gonna say that unemployed workers would actually benefit
if we take these this this this safety net away from
according to the outlets like CNBC and Fox american workers
have become too lazy they become too comfortable with the table scraps
did billionaires are throwing on the floor for them
and the trickle-down idea is that
if we give working port no table scraps at all
then the economy is going to spin into a new level of prosperity
because those millions of what they call lazy workers
who can't provide for food or clothing for their family housing for their
children
that they're going to miraculously invent some new way
to generate money and that's going to generate an increase of prosperity in
our economy
that is really their argument listen to the argument coming from the hill
in coming from the the the store-bought corporate media
but you've got you've got if you listen to McConnell
you listen to bainer you wish in those types you can cook you're going to
conclude
they believe that when a person is starving
that that person is somehow gonna reach further down in find some character
in some resource that allows them to live
in in in launch themselves out of poverty since the days did that feeble
old tired old man ronald reagan
sold his trickle-down revolution the Republican Party
in all the oddballs who still call themselves Republicans
have taken on the appearance up of characters inner void
of of decency the Predators willing to allow it to to value a
right and wrong uniquely in terms up a dollar
but they so completely lost their moral compass in fact
that it this week the House Republican Conference
had to send out a memo telling them how to act like they had him empathic
the memo instructing them how you can at least fool the american public
to make them believe that you have a sense of compassion
the memo really did go out millions have unemployed people today
are going to be told by the republican
by the republican congressman the G the reason they voted against
extending benefits was because they were trying to help them they have compassion
the truth is we have a better chance %uh gasoline
dropping to a dollar a gallon then we do having a 2014 republican
even spelling empathy correctly or even spelling compassion correctly
I much less understanding it you know I did vise the house republican conference
fool
who sent out that ridiculous memo that they can't reinvent reality
the very reason that the people they're communicating with
our republicans in 2014
is because they have 0 kinship with the average American worker
they don't understand what it's like when a person can't feed their children
or have a place to live
are closed their children for years the republican advisers like frank luntz
have been trying to coach people 22 tempted to tell them how to act
people like Mitch McConnell in markle Ruby 0 coach them
into at least giving the appearance %uh being a well-adjusted human being
in the same way that the stripes will always
distinguish the difference between a damn zebra
in an extraordinary looking stallion the GOP
in front of a %uh a politician's name
is always going to separate that politician from the overwhelming
majority of Americans
who genuinely believe that empathy
plays a part in the way we treat our fellow man
the compassion really does matter in the way that we treat our neighbor
you can't afford food for his family people like mcconnell
in people like bainer I have to tell you if you're listening
you're always going to be a damn zebra you'll never be a stallion
fairness I don't know how they could make it any more bizarre but that
honestly is their pitch
they have people actually trying to say instruct them and train them
into how to look like they have sympathy and empathy be
you know anybody who's study psychology knows you really can't
change the rain have an individual
you know a if they if they're born without certain traits
it's almost impossible to to get those in there and you know it the lack of
sympathy the inability to
your true human emotions is you know is very textbook dsm-5 look it up
sociopath I mean this is sociopathic behavior
that they can't feel that they can understand what they're doing
I are you produced a couple stories a couple years ago
fair and where you set up the scientist he said the psychologist
that explain that you know what we can look at a child when they are in
the sandbox in we can tell whether they ever have a simple
a sense if empathy and compassion for the other child in the sandbox they can
tell at a very early age
in you know what it always follows them through
to win their adult so you can't teach empathy I might have Antonio in for Thom
Hartmann
we'll be right back
this is the Thom Hartmann program
I might have Antonio in for Thom Hartmann follow me today
on Twitter at bring a fire radio let's have some fun
a recent column for The Wall Street Journal Cyprus
semiconductor president and CEO TJ rogers
tried to defend capitalists and the process
show the really doesn't understand how markets work at all
Rogers is editorial was pretty much your standard right-wing talking point piece
about
are important so called job creators are the economy
without rich people like him he argued there'd be no investors know businesses
and no jobs
therefore he argued raising taxes on rich people like him as
counterproductive because it sucks away capital
from the people who can use the best to prove his point
Rogers brought up an example from his own life he wrote
couple years ago I decided to invest in my hometown a large Kash Wisconsin by
building a 1.2 million dollar lakefront rock
restaurant arrest right now permanently employ sixty five people
at investment in eighteen thousand dollars per job figure consistent with
US Small Businesses
it progressive taxation in the name of fairness and taken my extra 1.2 million
and spend it on a government stimulus program with 65 jobs have been created
for writers Hussain is that he is responsible for the jobs created by his
restaurant and that any attempt to raise taxes on wealthy individuals like him
with take away the resources necessary
to create such jobs Mysore arguments become so common
so ingrained in the right-wing mean machine
the last 32 years since Reagan took office its easy to forget how
fundamentally stupid it's contrary to what roger's claims as Wall Street
Journal piece
business owners don't create successful businesses are the jobs they generate
their customers
do and despite what you may hear from the talking heads and five so-called
News and CNBC
economies are driven from the ground up their on-demand
by how much consumers actually what to buy goods or services
if a business doesn't meet an existing demand in the marketplace
or create demand through innovation it won't succeed
it's as simple as that i knows from first-hand experience
I started seven companies back in the eighties for example my wife and I
started and trap a small travel agency
a call Sprayberry traveled on atlanta I had very little money at the time we've
been running a community for biz kids
I used my fifteen thousand dollar line a credit from American Express
as our startup capital like every entrepreneur I took a risk
but what made that risk turn into a six million dollar a year business and three
years
gave our travel agency in edge over its competitors
is the same thing the gay TJ rogers business an edge over its competitors
we met demand in the marketplace
the big secret right-wingers like TJ rogers don't want you to know
is that you don't even need a wealthy entrepreneur like him
to make a business success workers cooperatives work just as well
couple years ago I visited the town of montana gone in the basque
region of Spain home to the Great Mall undergone cooperative
that coop employs more than 90 thousand
people includes more than 250 companies
and generates a yearly revenue of around 25
billion dollars like any other good businesses
the monitor on cooperative satisfies demand
in the marketplace the only difference between the cooperative
and a big american corporation like TJ's are like wal-mart
is that the cooper in his own entirely by its employees
and most highly paid person earns lot less than six times what the lowest
papers
makes cooperative worker own companies
right here in the US like the Madison wisconsin-based Union Cab cooperative
have had similar successes all the while
plowing team the traditional hierarchical model
capitals course the only downside to coops for someone like TJ rogers
is that they don't let CEOs like am rake in millions
in a recent column for The Wall Street Journal
this portion the John Hartman program is
underwritten in part by carbon I dot com stamps dot com
and edison factor duck
on bag Tom Hartman
program I might happen tony is sitting in for Tom today I'm taking your calls
86 69 87
8466 or 866 745 2667
and tweet me tweet me today at the follow me on twitter
ring of fire radio let me see what you thinking about let's go some these
callers
armand out and break and in Florida you there are many there are of course I'd
like to mail you your
very brilliant man you can't help it you're an attorney I guess but you're
very very
recant they'd well you know i i guess several s big compliment I appreciate
Orman what's on your mind
well usually I'm along with are
you and Thomas are philosophical point-of-view
shoes me but on this issue
I really think and you now
everybody can come after me if they want but I think the republicans are really
acting considering how broke we r
an how screwed up our trade balances they're acting like the responsible
parent here
effort time to time you have to tell your children now
yeah they can happen yet they don't get the toy the walk
I wrist and the big picture but when you look at the
economics the global trade system that I don't agree where
I don't think it's free trade it's definitely not fair trade
any stimulus met we do now
is really gonna help China and its gonna make our direction hole deeper
and we can't seem to have our way taken the money
in the enchanting away from the are sociopaths in Washington DC so they're
not gonna change
say okay armen let me let me respond to some other okay let me just let me begin
by responding first the mall
but we don't there's it's not an opinion the trickle-down economics for example
has failed I don't think Matt affect the people who helped
engineering the very people stockman who helped ride it
he is the guy you actually engineer did came out in a book
came out in about a half dozen articles and said you know what we made a
terrible mistake
in week we can look at the history Intel we midterms terrible mistake affected
our GDP
effective employment it'd it affected the a prosperous
economy that that was turned on its head
according to david stockman himself he is the guy who wrote that Norman second
Parliament okay
are the you you understand the what's your throwing back to me
is exactly the talking point that was created
by the billionaire inheritance babies that you seem to be coming
to to defend here and what I mean by that is the billionaire and here it is
baby said
you know what if we can come up with a talking point
to where we make people believe
that with that austerity is good
that austerity is a place where we tried actually balance the budget
and we ignore are 80 100 years of history
both here and in Europe where we understand when government
puts money into infrastructure when they put it into schools when they put it
into broadening the base of the economy
the economy geometrically expanse
II don't you know Thom Hartmann by and I recommend you take a look at his last
book about the crash
the aggressive 2016 you understand a little bit better it's hot and I don't
at all work out on to judge you by
your lack of understanding about it the truth is most people don't get it
because they have been
they just simply been lied to the point to where
a there's no way that they can grasp the fax I mean if
if their listeners for to Fox News you you really gonna listen to did Steve do
you see in the morning
I mean this guy has a head original thoughts in CP found his belly button
and so this is a carregar that's out there spewing those kinda fax
let me go to kenneth in Linton Kennedy there yes so yet
yes cancer Mike yeah I think really what's going on today
is is really a I'm not really
you know a like a preacher in like that its to religious situation you might say
you got it go look at all the fax it goes on the day
you gotta look the Bible and hand the fact there he at work what's going on
around the world today
at and the politicians and everything
a they you know expression the republicans
I mean they it was true it what can i respond to an islamic usage was short on
time you let me respond
are anybody that wants to understand what the heart up the idea is that we
take your the least
have our brothers and her sisters can find that in matthew six
in Matthew seven if you want about the Bible look there the Beatitudes were
the if you take going to be a Tuesday with the most important
most extensive words if you'd wanna talk in terms of religion here
those with most extensive words the Jesus ever spoke
in why did he find it important to say close with your neighbor
take your love your neighbor take your the least love my sis
above your brothers and I'll do the same thing for you
why is it that we have a Republican Party
that his that is taking the religious movement the pat robertson's
and they now have pat robertson out there ignoring things like the
Beatitudes
talking so harshly about their fellow man that the you know
there's they have nothing in common with what those important words were trying
to
to say the the point being here tonight
is we have to understand we have to take a look back
in understand how is it that religion became so attached to politics
that we have characters like I hate EE and we have characters like
pat robertson in in in in billy graham's son whatever that character's name is
there we have them out there saying you know what we're not mandated
to take care of our neighbor how is it gotten their
you see that's that's the real underlying question here
and in what what fair and said before before the break I thought was brilliant
it has to do you don't invent a person like that and other words
you don't develop a personality that says I just don't give a damn
about my neighbor you look back to that child when they were playing in a
sandbox
is faring was talking about you look back a challenge in the sandbox
in you can tell how they were gonna turn out just following year after year the
reason we know that
is because sociologists have done that you can't change the mind a marker Ruby
0
or Mitch McConnell I might happen Tonio in for Thom Hartmann I'll be right back

is 4k that's the way it is today Wednesday January 8
2014 i'm jim DeMint skin for Thom Hartmann
on the news
the
might have Antonio sitting in for Thom Hartmann now the Republican party
doesn't see a problem with cutting unemployment benefits for millions of
Americans in
and the final realize that their lack of empathy might be a big problem for me so
now they're trying to teach others in their party had a pretty
in how to make believe that they have empathy
they have sympathy for the average American worker
I'm joined now by ice MC termite longtime friend and cohost on Ring of
Fire
wanna the smart folks in this business Sam I wish
well cheaper take when you saw that crazy memo that came from the republics
tried to tell people how to
how they can act like they have compassion well
I you know it it's an indication that when the republicans went home for their
their break that they got an earful the from their constituents I mean look this
is
gonna cause a tremendous amount of pain
for a 1.4 million people as if this Saturday
I who have been long-term unemployed
the number of long-term unemployed people I
defined as people have been unemployed for more than twenty seven weeks
is now up to about four million and in about to sixteen other senator's home
state
you're looking at a a lot of those long-term unemployed in so
they've gotta figure out how they're gonna walk through this minefield
because normal human beings normal americans basically react to this and
say
why are you punishing these people I you've got three or four people looking
for every one job that's available why won't you help these people out
and they are manufactured a reason but Sam listen
amor we've been doing this we've been doing radio and TV in all together for a
lot of years
and we always talk about how crazy
the Republican Party sometimes spins itself
into but this memo I mean this is a mess this is a memo
that is sent out trying to tell a person like Morkel Ruby 0
and Mitch McConnell how to act like they care
I mean that's what this memo is about I Asia it is it as you point out
they were getting killed in in public perception
so let me help you now doesn't this sound like frank luntz
when Frank Luntz said look you have you were taking
on the appearance Ave party completely
devoid %uh the heart the you taking on the appears have a party
completely lacking understanding and compassion
in people don't like you for that remember that that was Frank watch pitch
yeah
this is a continuation that isn't yeah absolutely i mean look the first the
first line in this memo is for every american out of work it's a personal
crisis for them and their family
I mean that's pretty obvious up but they it could be told this
I mean look you know how they are but they have a real problem have a real
problem here they had no legitimate reason
even by their own twisted logic to
deny people who are out of work and can't find work
some type of a minimal amount of relief
there is absolutely no logic to it and so the
the thing that the party is afraid of going into the 2014 midterm elections
is that they're gonna seem wildly out a touch
as wildly out of touch they actually are in hand literally need to have their
handheld
and explain well I understand that this is actually a difficult time
imean there's really there's nothing else that they can sell his rare
before before you came on Sharon cousins the you know our producer whatever
produce ring a fire
was with me and he said listen you know we get very you don't you can't teach
this right you it's like trying to say we're gonna take the stripes of a zebra
because this is this is just part of their hearts or memo try to teach him
how to act like they have simply
simply does it works the same way for them as it would for a sociopath but
here's the irony to me
the people that are going to be hurt by this by this
cutting 1.4 million jobs in this country i mean that cutting
the cutting access to a safety net for those be right
what's going to happen is not only is the economy losing
1 billion dollars a week and if you saw that number that's what this is costing
the economy
but into on top of that you have mcconnell Mitch McConnell
but Marco Rubio Rand Paul a buncha republicans
who are really being hurt by it because under their supervision in their state
their employment picture is dismal yet what's your take on
well you know I Inc in Kentucky four out of every 1,000 people lost benefits
which has an 8.2 percent unemployment rate and so are McConnell and
Rampal you like you say are feeling the pressure are in Florida you have seventy
thousand
73,000 job seekers they've lost on average about 230 bucks a week
are which of course is like you say there's a big multiplier effect
the best stimulus for the economy is to provide unemployment benefits
for those people who are seeking work aside from the fact that it simply
just the the moral in right thing to do to help these people
I N it also you know it helps the economy and so
I there's no logic to it they look like they're out of touch in fact
look there's not there's there's more and more commentators is more more
people who are writing about this
that this just looks like naked attempt to see the
to a to sabotage the economy Sam what do they want on the back to these people
who are already suffering
what do you think a CNBC pitch or the Fox News pitch
the Drudge Report gonna pitch in that is you know damn it these people just lazy
this woman who has three children are she's just lazy
she you know she loves her life in in no is really her fault
what is interesting is the numbers
that we're seeing coming back in the polls are overwhelmingly
against that idea the average American now understands no
a woman trying to support three children working two jobs part-time
this is not the life that she wants but this is nevertheless the
the pitch if we now if we force these people
into starvation then what's gonna happen is miraculously
they're gonna find some way to to add to our county that's the pitch we're
hearing right now on Fox News probably on this afternoon
there's two reasons why people aren't the believing you're in the
both of them have to do with the fact that it's simply not true
there's no data at all that shows that
people who are on an unemployment I it prevents them from getting work in fact
all the research out there shows that when people getting unemployment
checks it allows them to focus on getting work
it allows for them to pay the car payments so they can drive to the
interviews
allowed for them to get dry cleaning if they want to get dressed for for the
work
it allows them to Papa provide child care so they can go out an interview in
in pound the pavement
and the other thing is that the american people just know it anecdotally
they're looking around they know that there are three or four people looking
for every job that's available
they know that it with their neighbors are doing they know what their friends
are their cousins or their parents are there
their children are doing to look for work and so this is falling on deaf ears
and the memo itself proves it you know if that was a a talking point that was
working
that would be the headliner that memo but in well he let let me let me let me
go to something that you've talked about before I think it's right I think it's
right on point here
you you've always said Sam the reason a memo
like this where you're trying to tell your rank and file in your party
that you are losers in your losers because you don't have a heart
that that's the hardest thing your losers because you don't have a heart
your losers because you don't know what empathy years let me teach you what
empathy years
now what's your position has been and i i agree with this
is that you know what the a Mitch McConnell doesn't really care
RJR corn down in Texas doesn't really care
all they care about is their little area that they've been gerrymandered into
their shape in that little area in the only thing they're playing too is that
gerrymandered crowd yes so
Europe your response to my response but might be will my god
is a is the republican party has become so dysfunctional
is like trying to tell people how to eat you know when you sit down
don't eat with your hands okay you know pick up a utensil use the tears left
with his memos equivalent up
but your point has always meant it doesn't make any difference will get let
me hear your thoughts on
well I mean I think you know the the I would say there's a very an honest
because we do have
like I said 16 Republican senators who are from states where there are
they're simply very high unemployment but in the main this is why it's gonna
have a problem in the house because
you've got republicans who basically are playing to
I A a higher and higher concentration I've just
read me right-wing extremists voters because gerrymandering because they're
they're representing
a very narrow districts I mean jess is a reminder
we know that democrats in the congress
receive 1.5 million more votes across the country then republicans did
in the last election for for the house
yet the Republican still control endured their position I'm in in your position
has been in the past not
again not my position to is the rank-and-file
only care about what corn is doing in their little corner the well
absolutely perhaps an outlet let me show you but here's words also gonna hurt
them
a because because the fact is this is a national story
and an american find this kind of behavior appalling
and nobody is buying their bull the the sales pitch that somehow
the democrats have been offered any jobs proposals
I mean there's been on the table for almost two years now
from President Obama a fifty billion dollar jobs proposal
is only one thing that Washington can do to create jobs
and that is to spend money and the republicans refused to do it
I mean it's looking more and more like economic sabotage every day
and they're feeling the pressure right okay so look at your real quick shift
here got about a minute left
what you're seeing here now is the argument G we can't do this unless you
can find a way to pay for it
but let me just tell that's the argument the republicans are making yeah we would
do this if we had a way to pay for truth is
if this is going to be a tax break for millionaires and billionaires
or if this was going to be money that was going to go to their big donor EE
a defense contractors they'd find a way with back let me get more concrete
they're trying to pass a farm bill that is
fall loves a subsidies for big agriculture
they could save the money there they were so concerned about it but of course
they're not that just talkin yeah

all
when the Supreme Court issued its Citizens United decision back in 2010
many in the media predicted it would Asher in a new era of corporate
electioneering
and they were right of course but they only had half the story
you won't hear anywhere in the mainstream media but over the past
decade or sell
our elected representatives have slowly but surely had the power to decide our
elections
over to a very small handful %uh giant and mostly Republican connected
corporations
and they've done so by giving them the right to collect
and pout our votes at one time
County votes was something done by people like you and me
was so my volunteers political party representatives government workers
my mom used to do this there is anything sketchy with the results you can compare
those results with exit polls conducted by
1 I've many reputable polling companies the system worked for years and for good
reason to exit polls were and still are
the gold standard to detect fraud but something changed
and only in the United States in the early 2000's
private corporations armed with fancy new electronic voting machines
not everyday people began counting the vote they were helped out by President
George W Bush who in 2002 signed the so-called
have a Help America Vote proact this
bill game billions of dollars to states
all over the country so they could then give that money into giant electronic
voting machine corporations
supporters electronic voting machine say they're safer and better than manual
counting
that's just a flat out lie anyone wants to
easily can use a voting machine this way an election
if you don't believe me just check out this 2004 video
Howard Dean playing around with a deep ball boring machine
for he was guest hosting Tina Brown CNBC TV show
this is the official program that the county supervisor sees
as we can see here Howard Dean has a thousand votes and Lex Luger has 500 so
you're being left alone three you see we have
800 votes here for you and 400 for Lex Luthor let's just put those
will make that four hundred and will give a hundred votes to Tiger
let's just see what happened here we go back into jams the legitimate way
and as you can see now how are they not only have 500 votes
work with Lex Luger has nine hundred and Tiger Woods has 100% cotton
we just attitude from election it took his 92nd from
it really is that easy in fact quite a black box warning out or get a nonprofit
group dedicated to investigating problems
electronic voting and rig an election electronic voting machine is so easy
a chimpanzee can do it and you think this is all just a buncha hand-wringing
in
think again has ever since the early 2000's when the use electronic voting
machines really took off
things in america really got weird back in 2002 for example polling showed
popular georgia democrat senator Max Quillan
with a solid five point lead over his Republican challenger Saxby Chambliss
less than a week before Election Day when the votes were counted using
electronic voting machines made and operated by the depot corporation
chambliss emerge victorious by about two points so what happened
well might have had something to do with the software patch the default install
the machines
in democratic-leaning counties months before voters went to the polls
will never actually no what happened
as Robert F Kennedy Jr noted in his piece on the 2002 george's Senate race
it is impossible to know whether the machines were rigged to alter the
election in Georgia
evils machines provided no paper trail making a recount
impossible that's the whole problem with electronic voting machines
will never really No
welcome back to Tom Hartman program I might have Antonio in for Tom on taking
your calls on the biggest stories today
86 69 87 8466 or
866 745 to 6
6 seven let me go to when the calls right now Ron in Chicago
you there thanks technical
sure clearly a young people just real quick
I'm you know I have a real good year and I'm self-employed
I'm I gross a hundred grand and i sat down
figured out one day that at a hundred grand a year
it would take me 10,000 years to accumulate 1
billion dollars me can you tell me
why do we as a society why do we even need billionaires
you know don't let let me give you poetry also been a I mean
what you know rediscover the billionaires in and the government would
be in the black
isn't the real question ron how help how much you need to buy
I mean really how many Jets do you need our own how many vacation homes you have
to have
but I mean it really comes down to it it's really an odd
it's in hide mentality the American
public has it's the horatio alger
la in that is G if I
allow these billionaires to make more money
then it's going to be good for me because someday
I'm gonna be a billionaire or Sunday my child's going to be a billionaire
that still lie that has been told now how did they get there
I what you think about some that lied isn't just developed by itself
what you do is you you focus the lie
he you know you have focus groups that you pay from all over the all over the
country all over the world in fact the best analysis I can give you is we
handled the tobacco litigation that's settled years ago
in what we found was documents that said we have to figure out
how to convince the american public that it's just fine
for them to kill themselves in the way that they did that was they came up with
this
idea of freedom I need to have the freedom to kill myself
if I want to do it in you might remember the ads were people were out sitting on
the
you know that wings have airplanes it's really an interesting
it's an interesting dialogue that we could find in these documents and you
can go online and find a model know exactly will be there there there
and you'll be amazed at how gullible the American public and the world public use
how it is that we can have them thinking well you know I'm gonna side with the
billionaire
because I'm going to be a billionaire in the way they focus that the way they
sold the idea that
you know by golly we don't wanna have a death tax
because when we die we're gonna be taxed well no
not really because so few people
Erica even have the risk of being affected by the death tax
but they they sucked everybody into that so it's all
watch watch Mad Men sometimes it's about madison avenue
in its about hat what is science this is we work against these PR people all the
time
ok movie is a great you know you talk about dark
dark side love the PR business go look at the history above the Ogilvy for
as an international PR firm in they are able to focus these ideas and they say
look if we can do it like this we can sell the american public on this idea
well get a Christian Vail Colorado Chris you there
thanks for taking my call sure yeah this kind is just kinda
pretty simple question it ties in with what you're saying I'm
you know if I can understand the wealthy a rich guy
the Republican because you know you can see they have their interest
at heart and I I just don't understand how
people who are struggling or maybe not even showing the lake barely getting by
it's really like another live like that somehow
all those people biting you know there's a lot of them that still
being lied to you know defend republicans where
how they think that they have any apparent yeah area well you know that
again chris that's been looked at two
the I don't know if you've read Thomas Frank's what's the matter with Kansas
but he draws on a lot of interesting stories an interesting studies in that
book
a way for it get the analogy I like to use is this
how did wealthy I aristocratic
landowners in the south they were you know grown cotton and so way whatever
their own
how did they get their sharecroppers to believe
their share the sharecropper head anything in common
with this wealthy southern aristocracy how is it that they got that person
to put on AAA torn-up uniform
in charge into a union Canon knowing
that their chances of survival was almost zero
yeah in Thomas Frank would tell you in all everybody's look at it would tell
you
that what they found is they found reaction issue
in the reaction issue today maybe race
back then it was this idea of religion the they actually had these people under
their thumb
are in the Confederacy where they would attend a local church in the preacher
would say
God is on our side the union is the devil
in the oceans God is on our side you must do this
to protect your family so it's all it all takes place in different ways
but the manipulative nature of good psychology I don't mean good in a
in in a really good sense I mean a manipulative psychology is very
effective
in that's another example love it but Wayne in Chicago Illinois you there when
here yes so I let me crispy
all down %uh OCR yes
are I just wanna say that might perhaps Antonio
you are domain well thanks that's a big
I've gone lead to sit here for for Thom Hartmann cuz he is
he's you know let me tell you let it go off like to stay on line here but I want
a good quick story
there are people that moved into this business
have what what I'm doing here right now because if people
like Thom Hartmann inej Scholtz and people who came before
you know were out there long before anybody thought it was cool to be out
there
and I i hope. every generation perpetuates that because Thom Hartmann
has been responsible for that
when I've got a minute tell me what you think
okay are want to make two quick points ya got a minute
first of all we have to strike while the fire is hot
okay somebody like Rachel Madewell for instance
could go back to our way back to January 20th 2009 are
when this are present president got elected
are show people home many times
Republic used re *** oh yeah up the
she did a great job with that when is a good talking point I'll try to pick up
on
okay I might have Antonio in for Thom Hartmann
