bjbjz This new building is the realization of a dream for the Pascua Yaqui Native American
tribe. That's because it will serve as a hub both for passing down cultural traditions...
And bolstering the education of its people. SOT DR VIVIAN LOPEZ The education complex
will centralize a location...for our community members to be able to come to work with elders..who
are very much involved in our traditions and culture and at the same time be able to embrace
the academic components of our society. But getting the center off the ground was no small
feat. SOT ADRIAN MORENO s real complex to get buildings built on the reservation when
it comes to outside financing. Complex because tribal land is trust land, owned by the Federal
Government, so it can't be used as collateral for a loan. That's one reason Wells Fargo
has a Native American Banking Services Group. SOT CLINTON WAARA 4The value that the Native
American Banking Services group brings is we understand the general framework within
which tribes work, Our focus is identifying the financial needs of the tribal communities,
understanding where we can provide value and creating the partnerships that will deliver
the value to the tribal customers. And it was a combination of partnerships that helped
the Yaquis. Clint worked with Wells Fargo's Community Lending and Investment team to secure
special tax credits for the building construction. And he worked with Travois, an economic development
entity with expertise in Native American Issues. SOT MICHAEL BLAND WF provides the expertise
in Indian Country, specifically with Clint Waara and the Native American Banking Services
group, that other investors do not provide. And that helps with structuring the deal...
approaching tribal governments, tribal councils, it s helpful to have someone on the banking/investments
side...that understands some of the complexities and color of a Native American deal. Everyone
shared the goal of delivering the greatest benefit possible. And with New Markets Tax
Credits, the benefits are more than monetary. SOT MICHAEL BLAND This building here, 80%
of the construction workers are tribal members...and then when the building is completed, there
will be a total of 60 tribal members employed. And then you think about the education this
building will provide and how many tribal members can take that education and start
a new business in a few years. Ripple effects of benefit in a community where economic development
is welcome hope for the future. DR. VIVIAN LOPEZ This is a great opportunity to continue
the dialogues between our elders and our .young people as well as those individuals who may
have never learned some of the areas that are culturally relevant and connected to our
traditions. So it's a great opportunity. Everyone is really excited. SOT CLINTON WAARA There
s over 500 tribal nations, and the vast majority of those tribal nations, their members are
living in poverty. And committing to projects in Indian country has a very important and
exponential impact. And WF recognizes this. We re doing this every day and we re making
a huge impact...by leveraging the assets that WF has and that our tribe has and planning
together for the best outcome. gd!R gd!R [Content_Types].xml _rels/.rels theme/theme/themeManager.xml sQ}#
