I'm pleased to be able to speak with you this morning an announce that a couple of those
have come to fruition. One much much faster than we had anticipated, very, and it is very
good news.
Two thousand-eleven, something like February, of two-thousand-eleven we were approved by
the northwest commission to offer an EdD program. It would be something like a three-year program.
21 brave souls entered the program, our students, an unaccredited program and had faith that
we would deliver its accreditation. It was expected that upon graduation that we would
then be able to apply for accreditation, which would be somewhere next spring. And perhaps
by next year at this time, we would be accorded a grant of approval. I'm going to share with
you this morning some wonderful news that landed on my desk early last week. In a letter
from the North West Commission President. This is a result of our three year review
last April, where we were reviewed as a Baccalaureate granting institution and a Masters granting
institution. And quite cleverly, Steve Olswang, our Provost, included in the self study on
our Ed.D. program. So when I received the letter, we were surprised and I can tell you
delighted to be accelerated a year from when we thought we were going to be granted accreditation
as a doctoral institution. This is the operative paragraph:
The Commission granted the University accreditation at the doctoral level, to include the Ed.D.
program, with its emphasis in Leadership. The effective date of this accreditation is
September one, two-thousand-and-tweleve. It was retroactive. Congratulations on receiving
this recognition. Dr. Sandra Elman, President. [applause] This is big news for us on many
levels. It certainly sets us above a mass of other institutions by having achieved a
doctoral level pedigree. It also offers us immediate opportunity to sell EDDs as an accredited
degree and we have some immediate plans to do so. I've sent a proposal off to our friends
at National University with a plan for them to sell it the state school system in the
State of California, for which there is ample demand. There are not only some fifty-thousand
N.U. alum, there are also many many many thousands more individuals within the State school system
there that would benefit from this. Of course we have the State of Washington as well. We
are not limited to that. We can go way beyond that.
We have to acknowledge these people who had the foresight and worked hard and accomplished
it for us. Number one, of course, is Lee Gorsach. He lead the organization and led this effort
I know. I spoke with him earlier this morning and congratulated him and I told him his ears
would be burning around nine-o'clock this morning because I would mention his name and
thank him for the work he put forth on this. Certainly Dr. Olswang, Kelly Flores, Kurt Kirstein, Rebecca Cory, Margaret Chow,
Stephanie Brommer, Lousie Lahore, Kate Quinn, Sabrina Crawford, Cindy Singleton, Ruth Nichols,
Alysia Borelli, Bob Martin, Tammy Salman, Dr. Liz Fountain, Dr. Christine Katayama,
Dr. Donald Eismann, Dr. Pete Anthony, Dr. Stephen Condit, Dr. Margaret Chow, and Dr.
Rebecca Cory. Stand up so you can be recognized. [applause]
