She said that when she was little her Daddy came to her in the kitchen and said ‘Lets
go get Momma, make a picnic and go for a good old fashioned joy ride in the country.”
They made meatloaf sandwiches and pink lemonade, packed it up and they went to Momma and they
said ‘Come with us, come with us.’ She said, ‘Oh, I’m so sorry, I’m busy, have
a great time.’ And he died two days later. She told me that her mother talked about that
for the rest of her life - that she missed that ride. I’ll tell you, I never told that
story on stage, until about a month later. I was sitting at our kitchen table, I was
working on my lap top. I used to have an office, but now I have children. I’m sitting there
working away, and my husband is in the backyard with our then 2 year old and 4 year old boys.
The babies were both naked, they each had a hose and they were washing the car. My husband
sends me a text message that says ‘Its pretty cute out here if you have a minute.’ I texted
back, really fast, ‘Oh, I’m busy, I’m working.’ And then that story just filled
up my spine and I actually knocked the chair over I was so nervous dashing out there to
make sure that I didn’t miss it. This is why I am campaigning in a world that is going
to ask you to just keep packing it all in, for some open space. Because when the ride
comes to your door, I don’t want you to miss it.
