Science has to an increasingly large extent been alienated
from society and the general public,
alienating itself from its multiple sources of funding.
We propose a model based on the operational theatre
- an open platform in which the general public is enabled
actively to take part of the scientific world
Today the world of science has changed and most scientific
investigations are being executed in closed environments or in the field
With an increasing interest in space tourism and a decrease
in space science funding we see an opportunity for a symbiotic
relationship between the two.
Space tourism is no longer science-fiction, but an actual,
possible lucrative, reality (as seen in the *** space program
and several other private initiatives).
We propose a combined research and touristic facility in space.
A Scientific and educational entertainment.
We are placing ourselves in the orbit of the earth to accommodate
most possible scientific communities,
whilst at the same time allowing tourists to experience weightlessness,
a view of the earth, the moon and a closer look at the universe.
The idea of space-architecture is not a new one and
much speculation has been done in the field.
In 1825 Edgar Allen Poe wrote "The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Phaall ”,
in which a Professor Rub-a-Dub tries to go to the moon in a balloon.
This story is considered one of first true science-fiction stories.
Later examples of course includes Jules Verne, who’s stories and descriptions,
not only has become reality, but also acted as inspiration and foundations for later discoveries.
In the late 60’s many research projects of future space colonies were conducted.
Amongst them NASA and Rick Guidice proposed a habitat
The project became a case study for what would later become the ISS.
Conclusions of the project where Lack of Flexibility
The Initial Size was too great
and limitations in terms of changing initiations and expansion
Stanley Kubrics space oddessey 2001 (1969) was largely based
on these investigations and acted as scenario for the film
As such “Art challenges technology and technology inspires art” (John Lasseter)
We wish to challenge the idea of the “space-can” as a fixed typology
and furthermore to embrace the idea of adaptability and reconfiguration.
In this hostile and volatile environment everything is organized through forces.
An incredibly dynamic environment that makes the static obsolete,
that enables us to think beyond the limits of static and traditional architecture
the idea of total spatial fluidity, where floor and ceiling is essentially the same,
becomes a reality. Adaptability and constant movement becomes a matter of survival.
