Once the peaceful protest moved
inside - some women say they
protest
7.19 "STANDING UP FOR OUR RIGHT
TO BREASTFEED, IN PUBLIC."
No matter the location... 7.30
"OUR BABIES NEED TO EAT."
Even... In the people's house.
7.45 "IF WE NURSED ONLY AT HOME,
Mom's stood... Or sat... in
solidarity inside state capitols
across the country today for
National Nurse-in. But when
these paternal protesters lifted
their shirts...
8.17 "SHE SAID WE HAD TO COVER
UP."
Administrative Services was
worried. Children passing
through on tours could be
exposed. 10.20 "I UNDERSTAND
WHERE SHE'S COMING FROM BUT...
THIS IS ABOUT NORMALIZING IT AND
DOING IT OUT IN PUBLIC SO PEOPLE
CAN SEE."
And Iowa law agrees. It says,
"A woman may breastfeed the
woman's own child in any public
place." Public breastfeeding -
also protected by federal laws.
7.22 "A LOT OF MOM'S GET
HARASSMENT ABOUT 'GO TO THE
BATHROOM, YOU NEED TO DO THAT
SOMEWHERE ELSE. GO HOME AND DO
THAT' WHEN IT'S OUR RIGHT TO
BREASTFEED ANYWHERE." A
spokesperson with DAS now admits
- that worker was in the wrong.
Responding, "The Iowa Department
of Administrative Services
apologizes" and was "in error in
asking the women involved to
cover up while breast- feeding
during the event." Today's
organizer hopes this brought
attention to unwarranted
discrimination. 8.47 "YOU SEE
DO NURSING."
