International Model Forest Network
Improving livelihoods through renewable energy, Cachapoal Model Forest, Chile
We all know that climate change and community sustainability are two key elements
worked on at the Model Forest level and when we develop landscape management processes.
One of the main activities that we have developed has been the promotion of non-conventional renewable energies.
This technology transfer is seen as an opportunity for
families to obtain an investment in cheap technology that will allow them to minimize the cost of living,
reduce the use of fuels such as fire wood and supplement family income through the
exploitation of certain products obtained specifically from agriculture and the forest.
With these technologies, we are minimizing greenhouse gases sent to the atmosphere. Therefore, we contribute to the big challenge of climate change.
Since 2010 that the biodigester was built which is managed through the model forest that we started working on the biodigester with organic gas generated from animal manure.
I use it in the kitchen, for the water heater for the shower to get hot water,
and I also use it in the jam processing room, where I make jams and fruit honeys.
The idea is to be able to produce and commercialize more products and in this way I can grow my business.
First, we make savings by purchasing less gas. Since I cook jellies, I use more gas.
Before I used firewood.
I am contaminating less now and preserving nature.
This area is known for its important fruit production.
During the harvest period, a lot of fruit gets lost.
The house wives received the solar dehydrators.
They dry fruit and generate an additional income for their family.
At least I have my own business, I can get out of debt.
Other families could get away like me from their economic problems, It is very helpful.
Among the projects supported by the Model Forest are the solar ovens. Many people cook in
the morning, go to work and when they come back the meal is ready. They save time, fuel and energy.
20 people were trained in how to build these ovens.
90 more were built for families
with low incomes in the community.
It is a tool easy to replicate, easy to use and that can be modified based on family and community needs
We have worked in three specific municipalities that have reached a critical mass that has been building since 2008 to about 500 to 600 people.
The Model Forest is an entity that, through its partnerships with public
and private organizations, promoted resource investment, promote or restore certain practices
and allow that activities provide benefits to distinctive groups
and organizations related to the landscape.
