Ani is a friend, an inspiration to me, when I first saw her perform I immediately knew
I wanted to photograph her. I approached her after the concert with my crazy vision and
she said "Yea, sure, let's do it!" and we have been friends ever since.
So Ani called me and wanted to shoot for the CD cover of her new album Fantasies, Ferrytales
and Nightmares. Its a composition of classical pieces. This particular album is a collection
of very whimsical, magical, fantasy-like pieces from different composers. I feel very privileged
and honored to work with her on the cover of her album. She wanted to have a fantasy
like photoshoot, so we created a concept. The way that the photoshoot comes about is
that we meet, we create a concept, we think about what do we want to tell, what is the
story that we are telling, and then we create the looks for it. We did the hair and the
make up, we find the location, we find the outfits and then we shoot. We actually had
a very interesting and great designer Mark Roscoe design the clothes for the shoot. He
was the official designer for the Emmy's this year, he dresses celebrities from New York
to L.A. and he is a featured designer at New York Fashion week 2013. We created two looks
for the shoot, the dark and the light, which came out beautifully as usual. I feel very
privileged that my team consists of amazing people. My make up and hair, my girl Gabrielle
Post who I rely on all the time, who once again did some amazing work with Ani. We shot
at Richard Shay's studio in Glencoe, IL who is an amazing photographer, who had been shooting
celebrities and events for something like 20-30 years. Abraham Pina our camera man.
By putting together this photoshoot we want to bring the expression of this music to a
visual form, because ultimately we all can relate to light and dark, fantasy, nightmares,
and you kind of get lost in this feeling.
This particular photoshoot was a very long photoshoot. We shot both on the inside and
the outside. And it just so happened when we were all set up to shoot on the outside
it started to pour. The rain just came down, so we ran with equipment, make up , feathers
to the car. And that was that. Although everyone walked out exhausted from the photoshoot,
we got everything that we aimed for and it was a great shoot. It was a great experience.
And stay tuned for the album release. Ksenia Poulber Photography
