I'm Marlene Carrasco,
the Vice President of the Student Representative Council here at the
University of Western Sydney
and I would like to talk about my experience at university as a mature-age
Muslim woman.
UWS has offered me the opportunity
to redefine myself, to redefine my position in society and to develop my
skills in order to really assist
my community and also at the same time assist the community here at the
University of Western
Sydney. I believe that, um, the other thing that really
impresses me is the diversity of students here at UWS.
Students that have arrived here on boats are re-educating themselves, as myself,
and there's also younger students that are coming through as
first-time university students whose parents have no background
in in education, and some are illiterate. I find that absolutely inspiring, it offers
all of us an opportunity
to become more than we ever thought we could and to realize our dreams.
In my capacity on the
Campus Council and the SRC I'm able to influence
and and put into practice my experience in life and assist students to
learn to believe in themselves and also to pave the way for future succession
planning leaders who are going to
lead feature student populations.
