When I was a kid, and I saw the promo materials for this movie...my first thought was, Hey,
they made a movie about Sting! Should tell you something about my interests. I watched
more wrestling than movies, so...nope. Never saw The Crow. Fast forward about 15 years,
and here we are. Im playing The Crow: City of Angels.
And my first thought was, Hey, they made a game about Sting!
Obviously, thats not Sting. Thats a guy named Ashe, or something. The dude was
murdered, and of course, thanks to supernatural crows...he comes back to life. As the six-time
WCW heavyweight champion. Only in this game, he doesnt waste his time with submission
moves. He just bashes people in the face, with...crowbars.
Lucky Earl Hebners not around. Thats an easy DQ.
So from what I understand, City of Angels follows the movie pretty closely. Youre
a zombie, basically. Back from the dead. Speaking of dead things, you dont see many games
that play like this anymore. Its basically the old Resident Evil setup, where pushing
up on the control stick...actually means going whichever direction youre facing. Not up.
I would love to meet the guy who thought that was a good idea.
Id slap him in a submission hold. Freaking jabroni.
So the game plays like a clunky mess. And its not even a matter of preference. I
mean, I know some people actually like these tank controls, but City of Angels doesnt
even do them well. Like, its objectively bad. Were talking laughably slow. You have
to turn your character, to face your enemies, before trying to hit them. With fixed camera
angles, that make things even harder to judge.
Man, 1997 was the worst.
First ReLoad, then this.
Basically, all youre doing is beating people up and moving on. Theres nothing to do
beyond that. The environments are pretty empty, and things get boring within minutes. And
again, its not just outdated game design. I mean, its that...plus really bad game
design. And the reviews this thing got, even back then, kind of prove it.
Bad games are bad games. And when theyre bad and outdated, theyre The Crow: City
of Angels.
