Hello there. In this video we're taking a look at how to speed up slow down and reverse
video in Adobe Premiere Elements 11. I'm going to show you two different tools
that can be used for these types of effects. So we're looking at a project example right now with a video clip already placed on the timeline you
may recognize this as the Tacoma Narrows Bridge disaster video. This is from the public domain.
There is a section where the bridge collapses. So right at that point we may want to slow the video down or even replay it
by reversing the video to bring the bridge back up after it has collapsed.
So we can do this in a couple of different ways in Premiere Elements. There are two different tools that we can use
to create these types of effects and these are located in the tools panel.
When you click tools and scroll down
you'll see that there is a time remapping tool and a time stretch tool and these will both allow you to change
the time or reverse video but they're both just a little bit different. I'm going to start by demonstrating the time stretch tool.
And then I'll show you time remapping and you can experiment with these on your own of course and see which works best for you.
So I'm going to start with time stretch but before I select this
I want to split the section of the video clip that I will apply it to. Otherwise the time stretch will apply to the entire selected video clip.
Notice that we have a single clip. So if I use time stretch
the entire thing will be impacted. Well I'd rather not do that. There's only a little piece here that I want to adjust.
So I need to find the starting point and it's right around 2 minutes on this video.
I can drag the current time indicator or I can click here on the number
and actually move it move the current time indicator to the position.
Right around 2 minutes on this video so I'm going to change these numbers.
Press enter and that positions the current time indicator right at the beginning of this segment that I want to slow down or possibly even
reverse. So once I have the current time indicator in place I look for
the little scissors button. This is the split clip tool.
I'll split the clip right here. Then I'm going to move it out about 15 seconds.
Because that's as much of this clip that I want to impact with the time effect. That's pretty close.
So I'll split it again I could use the numbers to get really specific but I'm just going to split it right here.
So now this one little piece that I've cut out that I've split out is going to be
slowed down and reversed. I'll show you how this tool works. So click that tools button.
Go to time stretch and select that.
Now this is the time stretch tool. I can speed up slow down or reverse this little video clip that I have selected using this simple tool.
Right now it's at 100 percent speed. If I want to slow it down I can drag the slider or I can just type it in.
So there that will be 50 percent speed so I'm slowing it down.
Notice that I have an option to reverse and to maintain audio pitch. Maintain audio pitch attempts to
keep the audio from being impacted too much but it's not always perfect. I'll show you how this
works really quick. I'm going to select OK leaving this unselected.
Notice that it stretched out that video clip. It's slowing it down.
So now when I play this it's going really slow
and the sound has also been slowed way down. So the voice narration is going really slow.
It did not maintain audio pitch. If I right click on this I can get to time stretch here. This is another way to get to it
and reopen that tool. This time I'll click maintain audio pitch. Select OK. Try playing it again.
The audio sounds better. It's not perfect but it's not that slow draggy audio that we had just a moment ago.
Now I'm going to right click again. Go to time stretch. This time I'm going to reverse.
Now maintain audio pitch is not useful at this point because it will actually reverse both the
video and the audio. So we get that nice backwards English. So when I select OK
and now the bridge will reassemble. It has reversed the
video. Now we can get rid of the audio entirely in this segment and remove the
problem with the audio being impacted by the time stretch. To do that I can right click
go up to delete audio and it will take that out entirely.
And now we can play the reversed video and see the bridge magically reassemble itself.
So that is the time stretch tool and it's very nice if you have just a little clip that you want to quickly
change the speed of or reverse it. Now the time remapping tool is a little bit different and I'll demonstrate that really quickly.
First I'm going to delete everything on the timeline and start over. I'll just marquee select all of this. Press delete.
And now I'll go back up to the project assets panel. Grab my video. Drag it back to the timeline.
This time I'm going to use the time remapping tool and this is a new tool in Adobe Premiere Elements 11.
To get to it I click the tools panel to open it and right above time stretch we see time remapping.
So I'll click that. And this allows us to place as many
time effects as we want to along that entire video clip. We don't have to split the clip
to do this. I can slow it down speed it up or reverse it in multiple places if I wanted to
Right now I'm going to go back out to that same place with the bridge collapse right at 2 minutes.
Once I get my current time indicator positioned I can apply this. I can also change
the time directly here by typing it in
but I'll just drag the current time indicator out to about 2 minutes.
And now this is the point where the bridge is about to collapse and one thing I'd like
to do is slow this down but I need to first apply a time zone to this timeline to do it and I can
click this little plus button to do it or I can use add time zone which is down here to add a new time zone.
Now it automatically adds a time zone area that we can say slow the video down reverse the
video or speed it up in this zone and it will not impact the rest of the video
although you'll see in a moment that the audio is kind of put out of sync but let's take one thing
at a time. So we've applied the time zone its 9.4 seconds. I know from
experimenting that I want this to be actually about 15 seconds. So I'll change the duration
to 15. I'm going to ease in and ease out because it has a more gentle
transition into and out of the effect. Now I've got my time zone set.
Now I can choose to slow this down a lot or just a little.
I can choose to speed it up. I can go forward and reverse. You see we have a lot
of flexibility in here. I'm actually going to slow this down quite a bit.
And then I'm going to select reverse. Now this has an interesting effect.
and it will explain that to you or at least it should explain that to you in the note up in the top right
corner. But what this does is it plays in the forward direction then it plays it backwards
and then it plays it again forward. So it's a very interesting replay effect where you
get to see it come back up and you can't really see it from here until we have applied it.
Now another thing to point out here is frame blending. If you're slowing
down your video it might help to smoothen out the video. So I'll probably select that.
I can remove audio but it will remove all of the audio so I probably won't do that.
Reset restores it and removes all time zones. Now also know that I can also apply multiple
time zones in here too. So if there's another area that I want to slow down let's say right here
I can add another time zone and let's say slow it way down so that we can look at that motion of
the bridge really slow. I may turn it back a little bit.
Okay, once I have positioned my time zones all I have to do is click done.
And now notice that the video part
has extended beyond the audio so they're out of sync and that can be a real problem. So this is why I sometimes like to use
the time stretch tool as I demonstrated a few moments ago just to split out
a section and apply it to that apply my time stretch to that.
But sometimes the time remapping tool is really nice and especially if the audio is OK if it goes out of sync if its just music or narration
that does not have to actually be perfectly in sync it might be OK with that. You can also split the audio and move it around as you need to.
But anyway we've applied the time effect so let's go out to about 2 minutes where we
applied that slow down and reverse. So here we see the collapse
and now here we see it come back up.
Then it replays the collapse again. So it plays it reverses it and plays it again. So you can do that
really easily with the time mapping tool if that's something that you're interested in doing.
Now if you want to go back in and make changes after you have applied
time remapping you can click on the video come back to tools go to time remapping
and change or modify your zones as you see fit. So it's really easy to go back
in and make changes if it doesn't turn out quite right. Same with
the time stretch tool. You can always reopen and change the effect once it's been applied.
Well that's all I have for this video.
Good luck with your video editing projects and good bye for now.
