So, you’ve applied to MTC. That’s great.
You’re gonna love it here.
My name is Leah, and I’m here to talk about taking the MTC Placement test.
You gotta take the placement test to be accepted.
Almost everyone coming to MTC who has never attended another college before
takes the test.
Even I did!
That’s why I’m here.
To offer a little advice and information about the test
to help you prepare.
Now, calm down, it’s not as bad as you think,
and it’s actually a good test.
I can hear you now. A good test! How is that possible?
Well this test helps with selecting your first classes.
The classes will challenge you, but you'll be ready to handle them.
The placement test shows where you are academically.
What are your strengths and what areas you may need to work on.
It covers 3 basic areas. Reading, writing and math.
One of these not your strong point? Well that’s okay.
It’s not how good you are, it’s about where you are.
So, what can you do to prepare?
Well, first thing you can do is chill out. Okay, it is a test.
You simply do your best, answer every question, and take your time.
This really is a test a test to help you succeed.
Really! It is!
Second, take the test seriously. The test determines what classes you can enroll in for your first semester.
So don’t just breeze through it, take your time.
I can’t say that enough.
Make sure to read the instructions carefully, as well as the questions.
Read them twice if you need to.
Remember, there is no time limit. Well, except for closing time.
So always make sure and give yourself plenty of time.
Another thing you can do to prepare is check out the online help.
Go to the Student Assessment website at www.midlandstech.edu/testcenter
Click on the placement test link, then the COMPASS link.
This page has links to online study guides, essay writing sample information and more.
Okay, I know, I know. You’re saying to yourself. Essay! Really?
Calm down. You're given two topics to choose from.
You pick the one you want to write about.
Just remember, when writing your essay, there are some basic rules to follow.
Make sure you have a good opening statement, then support your statement with strong content.
Then, a nice conclusion to wrap it all up.
It really isn’t as bad as you are imagining.
So, now that you have all of this information, it’s time to go take the test.
Again, just go to the Student Assessment web site and click on the test schedules link.
Then, click the COMPASS link, and you’ll see the times to take the test.
Remember, this isn’t a timed test, so give yourself plenty of time to take it.
The test may take up to three to three and a half hours.
So if you want to take the test on a day the last start time is three thirty,
my suggestion would be to come even earlier.
If you are like me, you want all the time you can get.
Remember, the placement test is going to help you get started on the right path to success.
If you have any questions, or want more information,
go to their web site at www.midlandstech.edu/testcenter
or give them a call at 822-3659 for Airport,
or 790-7522 for Beltline.
And again, welcome to MTC!
I hope this helps. I know you’ll do just fine.
