For those who may not be familiar can you tell us what the Giving Green campaign is?
Sure it is a combined effort for UNC Charlotte to give to three great organizations.
We have our Arts and Science Council. We have our state employees combined campaign
and then the UNC Charlotte Foundation and the Giving Green Campaign is actually a combined
effort where we can give one time to three great organizations.
And why did you volunteer this year to be one of the co-chairs?
I learned very, very early on from my mother the importance of giving and so I believe
in this institution and several of the organizations and so it's a part of giving, whether it's
financially or giving of time and so I was actually when I was asked to be co-chair,
I was very honored and humbled and I sort of like why me.
But I believe in giving and so I was like sure I'll do it.
And I had a great co-chair with me, Joel, has been great to work with.
So, I'm honored to be co-chairing with him.
Great! Great! And why is important for unemployed to participate in Giving Green as opposed
to just giving individually throughout the year?
Well, through the Giving Green campaign one of the things that that we're doing as faculty
and as staff, it is our opportunity to say to the community as a whole how much we value
the community, how much we value giving, and supporting you; and it is a way for us to
have, like I said again, a combined effort for us to say we're in this together and we
want to support you and provide support to you.
So what kinds of organizations or what specific organizations do you give to or that are just
near and dear to your heart?
So, my grandfather and my grandmother both died of cancer.
My mother and my aunt are about cancer survivors and so one of the organizations that I support
is the American Cancer Society and as well as my family supports our organization as
well. My nephew is a young man with special needs
and through Special Olympics both local chapters and North Carolina Special Olympics I have
just seen his confidence build, his self-esteem build and now even at the age of 37 he still
looks forward to the local games and the state games.
And so that's an organization also believe in their worthwhile efforts.
That's wonderful, that's wonderful. So the Giving Green campaign wraps.
How do we continue to give green throughout the rest of the year? And how do you practice
that giving green throughout the rest of the year?
So all the faculty and staff here at UNC Charlotte had 24 hours of community service leave and
so I really encourage everyone to take to use of that leave and give back up your time
to organizations that you believe in. I give of my time to the local school system.
I service tutors and volunteers, guest readers, end of grade test Proctors.
I also work with beginning teachers and support them as well.
So I use my 24 hours every year and then some. But it's a great opportunity and I'm really
appreciative to the University for allowing us to do that.
Absolutely! That's a great benefit that we have.
So in addition to a financial contribution, what type of impact do you hope this year's
campaign makes, other than a financial one?
I really hope this year we stake our claim in this community because I think it's really
important for us not only to give financially, but to give of our time which is so very precious
but also to provide service to the community. I think sometimes we may be the best kept
secret here but we've really are true gem and we have a lot to offer.
So, it's time for us to stake a claim for sure.
Okay. So today was our kickoff event?
Yes.
So you and your co-chair revealed something to employees at this event.
Can you tell me a little about that?
Yes, so Joel and I wanted to make special plans today and we were talking about what
exactly would that amount be, what would that number be.
And so as I was leaving campus a few weeks ago after class in reflecting on the day.
I was in traffic on Cameron Boulevard and I was thinking okay what number and I'm looking
up and I see the beautiful banners on our campus that say UNC Charlotte 1946 and I'm
like that that's it! That's a sign. And so in honor of Ms.
Bonnie Cone and the founding of our university, we made a combined Pledge of 1,946 dollars
to the campaign.
Wow! Well hopefully that generosity inspires everyone to make their own pledge or donation.
So, the kick-off, what else did people miss today that weren't able to make it?
Yes. We had a great turnout! It was a beautiful
day. We had great food.
Chartwells did a tremendous job today. We had raffles some people want some really
cool prizes really nice prizes. We had great desserts made by faculty and
staff here on our campus. Oh, the resource the vendor fair, the organizations
great opportunity to meet various organizations and people connected with the SECC and also
the ASC. Actually had animals here from the Raptor
Center. And actually I did not realize the Raptor
Center actually started here on our campus, so just a lot have good food, fun, and great
fellowship today.
Sounds like it. So what would you say to someone who just
says it's really not in my budget this year. I'm just I'm just not gonna be able to make
a gift?
No amount is too small. You know giving financially is one way to
give and we would appreciate any donation no matter how small or how large.
I would also say give of your time. It we never know what a difference that we
make in someone's lives but we know what a difference it makes in our life to give back
so I would say give. No matter what.
Give of your time. Give financially.
Give of your service.
And that's a good point because we also during this campaign we have Volunteer Week so let's
pull up and look it's love those opportunities and you can talk about those.
Yes, so we have five great organizations that you can volunteer with during are Giving Green
Volunteer Week and we have the Second Harvest Food Bank, the Men's Shelter of Charlotte
where we'll be doing operation PBNJ. We also have Classroom Central and the Rapture
Center and the Crisis Assistant Ministry. We promoted a couple of weeks ago my College
of Education Campaign Champion Susan Harden and I presented to the College Education faculty.
And we really encourage them to volunteer. And Classroom Central is actually the opportunity
where I'm going to volunteer actually in being an educator.
So that special place that provides resources and supplies for our teachers and our students.
And so I encouraged our faculty to participate and encourage all faculty and staff if they
have the opportunity. Some opportunities for volunteering here on
our campus and then others are out in the community.
So great five great organizations and can give of your time and service this way.
And I think we have a little video from last year's Giving Green Volunteer Week and so
maybe this can serve as a little bit of inspiration.
Okay so that was a great video and hopefully makes people want to get out there at least
during Volunteer Week and spend some time with those local organizations.
Now there are some incentives that people can get just by participating and Giving Green.
Can you tell us about those?
So note in the video clip you saw many of the volunteers wearing their Giving Green
shirts. And so this year if you volunteer and if you
donate you get one of these nice Giving Green green UNC Charlotte shirts says Giving Green
49ers in the Community on the back so this is one way.
A lot of our faculty and staff are wearing their shirts today so that was great to see
the sea of green there today at the kickoff as well each the colleges and each of the
department and areas have some different kinds of SWAG Giving Green SWAG to give away.
So we have someone that here in the front. We also have an addition to these items we
have jump drives and pens. We have the pins like I'm wearing here as
well. So by giving him by donating will have raffles
and give items away. So there's you get something back in return
for your gift as well.
And something to show that we're out there in the community when you're out volunteering
wear your shirt.
Wear your green.
So is there are there any final thoughts that you have or anything that you'd like to let
people know about the Giving Green campaign?
It's a great opportunity. It's a one-time opportunity for you to get
and I would just are reiterate once again no gift is too small whether it's financially
or whether it's giving of your time and your service.
I just encourage everyone to give and give green.
Well thank you so much Misty. It's been great talking to you and hopefully
we will see those shirts across campus.
I hope that.
And throughout the rest the year as well. Thank you everybody for tuning in to the Live
Wire and watching and listening to what our fabulous Co-Chair of Giving Green campaign
Misty Hatchcock. Thank you again.
You're welcome. Thank you for having me here today.
