Alot of people ask me about metric modulations or poly-rhythms.
I break it down into subdivisions. One, Two, Three, Four.
Clap this rhythm and sing the melody.
Your brain will actually treat the same rhythm at a different tempo
as to be a different, essentially a different rhythm. One, two, one, two.
This is not at all a drumming exercise, but this is really something
that everybody should be able to do. We're going to start on the second
note of the triplet now. One, two, three, four. Triplets grouped
in fours now. This is
the same rhythm but it's just placed so we actually hear it as a
different rhythm. One, two, three. By really learning
all these different permutations of the same rhythm, it really helps me
in a musical way as an improviser, that I can take an idea and I can
develop it farther.
