Will you have the same sensitivity or sensation? The sensation in a DIEP reconstructed
breast is not the same as sensation of the mastectomy skin, and that is because the tissue
that we transport from the tummy does not bring along with its nerves and nerve endings.
Having said that, over a period of six to eight months when the reconstruction settles
and the scar tissue softens, quite often, we as surgeons are quite surprised by the
extent of sensations that the patients do feel and demonstrate in the reconstructed
breast, especially when they come in for a *** reconstruction, a procedure that is
done under a local anaesthetic. They do feel the injection going into the tissues and are
quite aware of the feeling in the breast. The answer to the question is probably the
sensation is not the same as or not as good as in implant reconstruction, where you have
the native skin of the mastectomy, but you still will have good quality sensation in
the reconstructed breast. If you need any more information about this, you can click
