Ever had the urge to drive your car straight into a lake? Well, now you can...
“A one-person all-terrain vehicle that doubles as a personal watercraft is scheduled to go
on sale by the end of this year.”
The Quadski is made by an American company called Gibbs Technologies. It turn from a
land vehicle into one for the water at the touch of a button, in only 5 seconds. The
vehicle can also go up to 45 mph both on land and in the water.
Which, according to The New York Times, is due to the vehicle’s fairly impressive engine...
“The Quadski is powered by a 175-horsepower 1.3-liter 4-cylinder that Gibbs buys from
BMW. It's nearly identical to the engine in the BMW K1300S HP motorcycle and is backed
by a 6-speed transmission.”
Gibbs Chairman Neil Jenkins told The Wall Street Journal he thinks there’s a market
for these hybrids in the U.S.
“Let’s say you are in New Jersey and you want to get to New York City. Instead of waiting
in a traffic jam at a bridge or tunnel, ‘you simply slip into the water, drive across the
water and come out on the other side.’”
Gibbs Technologies expects their amphibious vehicles to be ready for the commercial market
worldwide by 2014. But expect to pay a pretty penny — with an estimated price of $40,000.
