Social groups, trends, cultures
or subcultures, Otakus are looking for the new fashion from Japan,
from manga culture above all.
People think that wearing jeans is normal
There are different kinds of visual, mine is:
be cool, fashion and glamorous as possible.
It doen't mind if they are calles lolitas, visuals, or whatever
their daily style is like risen from a comic book.
When you are dressing lolita nobody is going to call you hottie, or chick
or things like that....sometimes they call toy "school girl" but it isn't usual.
Generally boys are scared about going with us dressing so strange and they don't use to see us attractive
because it's a style that covers all the body.
I don't really consider it a corny style because it's very transgressor
I call it "Punk in damsel version"
because it's really difficult going like this on the street
and don't have a strong character
look how I am dressed......this is ridiculous for my age
but when I discovered it I thought:
There is a part of me that have been hidden a lot of years
and it has to come out and I don't mind what people say.
Well, this is my closet
I'm going to show you the dresses that I have right now...
Candy is 30 years old and consider herself a lolita since 3 years ago
it's a fashion style with nothing in common with the "lolita" from Nabokov
it's a Japanese trend that is captivating
the young Catalonia girls keen on manga: otakus.
When I was a little child I saw Candy Candy, these antique big eyes
and I didn't know if it was from Japan or where but I was totally fascinated.
Candy Candy is like the first, for me she was the first lolita.
Lolita is great because one day you can dress totally black
that you look like a XIX century Lady or like a vampire
and other day you can go like a little girl, and your children part comes to the surface...
you can play with the little presents of life and say: "How wonderful is everything!"
In spite of the different kind of styles, the most important condition is that the dress must follow the women's figure.
If it doesn't have the specific shape of the XIX century dresses
with all this under it it's not lolita, it's another style.
Well, it's not very useful but it's comfortable because you are like on a cloud
and, I don't know, it's cool, I like to feel all the petticoat layers
Behind this childlike, shy and innocent style
is hidden a lover of fashion that has been metal, hippy or gothic.
From all these different and extreme styles
she has kept the love for hard rock.
It's true that most of lolitas, if not all, a lot
have a really avantgarde musical preferences, pretty strange.
The music I like goes from psychobilly or rockabilly
to new generation rock or extreme metal.
I think I was born this way (freak)
I've always been different, I know it and I accept it
and I don't mind.....I'm really strange.
Esta tarde Den ha quedado con Candy y otros jovenes amantes de la moda nipona
Dressed like the characters of their favorite comic books
they attract people curiosity.
It's really common being walking around and people is looking to you with a strange face
but we're use to it and we want to disseminate this culture
so it's ok.
Some of the most common sentences are:
"Are we on Halloween?l" or "Halloween has finished yet"
or: "are you coming from a play?"
I'm very surprised to see them dressed like this but it's very original
and well, I really thought we were on Halloween, but not, but I like how are they dressed like
girls above all, with this socks, it's funny.
There are some people that look at you, other people insult you, other people just ask...
it's not really comfortable but you have to deal with it, they don't know what it is...
People think that wear jeans is normal, for me standard is not normal, normality doesn't exist to me
for me is a fashion that came from EEUU a long time ago and it's totally accepted.
I'm leaving....I have to go to work.
There are not so many otakus that dare to dress with their favorite clothes at work
Maite is interpreter and se can go with her best aristocrat dress to work
First of all people is very surprised but then, when they see that you aren't very obsessed
with this and they realize that you have your life and you just incorporate this to your way of life, going to work, to university..it's ok.
Cult around outrageous clothes and figures has a price:
Importation.
Candy, as other young otakus
buys her caprices online or on magazines
because be don't have sellers here yet.
This blouse is around 100 euros
the skirt 120-130 and the shoes more or less the same.
It's not cheap. We are always saving some money in order to buy
our thing and when they arrive it's like a Christmas day.
One of the things that lolitas do are Tea Parties.
While eating cakes they talk about the last news of Japan.
- This is for you Amy you have to gain weight. + I have this socks, the same. - That's true!
I don't know how fashion works in lolita style but in Gal's world
every two days, every month you can see that even on a magazine
they show a shoes and their competitor's magazine says that it's not trendy.
I spend less money on clothes since I dress lolita
I used to go shopping and burn the credit card because every 6 months you have to change your wardrobe.
Second hand Chanel? Please, that was like: has to be mine!
and now you have your few things and they don't go out of fashion so you can buy accessories or other things and do different outfits.
I don't think I¡m going to dress like this forever, it's not feasible
first of all because I don't want my mum to think that I have lost sense
I don't see myself dressed on a Baby dress with 40 years old
but I will always have this part of me because these have been some of the most amazing days of mi life.
