After Mortal Kombat 4, the series fell on some hard times. Some will say it was because
the series suffered from overexposure while others will say it was because Mortal Kombat
Sub Zero and Special Forces just were not good. But after some years on the sidelines,
the main series came back into the fight and broke major ground for the series, introducing
things that would become mainstays and things you couldn’t imagine a Mortal Kombat without.
One thing the series does is start the game off with some major plot twist. Before the
opening title scene is over Liu Kang and Shao Kahn are dead. I mean seriously, how do you
kill off two of the biggest characters in the series? And he didn’t even go down heroically
but rather had his neck snapped from behind by the deadly alliance of Shang Tsung and
Quan Chi. So the heroes of Earthrealm are out to save the world and avenge Liu Kang.
The fighting in the game has seen some major changes from MK4, and by major changes I mean
it is almost unrecognizable. It is a well developed 3D fighting game, that doesn’t
hold anything back in terms of specials and gore. There are a bunch of fighters to choose,
from series staples like Sub Zero and Scorpion to newcomers like Kenshi and Frost. And each
character actually plays differently. Each fighter is given three different fighting
styles, with normally one involving some type of weapon. Each has its own strengths, weaknesses,
and move sets, which makes it all that more impressive. Let me explain how great it is
to impale your enemy with your sword then juggle them in the air. Actually, I don’t
feel like I have to because that explains it all.
But two big things were introduced in this game and those being the Krypt and Konquest
mode. After you fight and win, you will earn Koins of assorted colors. These can be used
to unlock coffins down in the Krypt, which is a huge graveyard full of secrets. Some
things are as basic as concept art, but there is also additional characters and costumes.
And there is Konquest mode, which is basically just a long tutorial for each character that
provides backstory as you learn to master the new skill sets. It is a good way to learn
and also earn koins.
Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance did what it needed to do and that was show that Mortal
Kombat can still be awesome. It’s bloody fun and bloody gory and was a great kickoff
to a new era of Mortal Kombat.
