Durban, South Africa, a place currently at the centre
of global discussions on climate change.
United Nations-backed talks in the city,
featuring leaders and delegates from nearly 200 countries,
aim to lay out concrete steps towards
a more robust international climate change policy.
This comes after scientific evidence that the
very future of our planet is at stake -
the World Meteorological Organization reporting that carbon emissions
are at their highest in history, and rising.
Addressing the conference Tuesday, UN Secretary-General
Ban Ki-moon said that though parties
must be realistic about a breakthrough at Durban,
progress has to be made.
Time, he emphasized, is not on our side,
and "political courage" must be employed in order for the world
to stand united against climate change.
