Mutuality, Efficiency and Freedom Mars was built on an objective, first expressed by
Forrest E. Mars, Sr. in 1947, that calls upon us to create a mutuality of benefits for all
of our stakeholders through our operations. We strive to do this by putting our Principles
into action every day to make a difference to people and the planet through our performance
-------------------- COCOA SUSTAINABILITY SCRIPT: Around the world, cocoa farmers are
working *** their small farms to provide for their families. But it is not always an
easy task. Many farmers today are faced with the challenges of poor trees and soil, few
skills, and little opportunity to reinvest in their farms and their communities. Many
don t want their children to continue growing cocoa because they want their sons and daughters
to have better opportunities and a better quality of life. They are proud of the work
they do, but the difficulties that current growers face make it difficult for them to
see a future in which they, and their farms, are thriving. At Mars, we believe that ensuring
a sustainable future for the farmers who grow our cocoa is critical. That s why our guiding
principle is putting Farmer s First. We know that if we enable farmers to increase their
yields and their incomes, they will be able to reinvest in their farms and provide for
their families. Most of the world s cocoa is grown by more than five million smallholder
farmers in parts of West Africa, Southeast Asia and the Americas, where underinvestment
and poor farming practices, have led them to struggle with aging cocoa trees, pests
and disease, depleted soils and unpredictable rainfall. With the resulting low productivity
and incomes, farmers often lack education, information and financing to improve skills
and output, keeping them and their families in poverty and limiting access to basic services
like education and health care. We believe that securing cocoa s future against rising
demand and greater economic and environmental pressures begins with Putting Farmers First
-- enabling smallholder farmers to increase their yields and, by extension, their incomes.
Our approach has three parts: Working toward our goal of sourcing 100 percent certified
cocoa by 2020 Investing in scientific research to improve crop cultivation Working with cocoa
growers to apply the results of our research We have witnessed firsthand the positive results
farmers achieve when companies like Mars invest in their future. Growers in Cote d Ivoire
and Indonesia are optimistic, they are seeing the positive role that cocoa can and will
play in their future. Our work in the field of cocoa sustainability is just one of the
ways that Mars is making a difference to people and the planet through performance. To find
