Well we have a comprehensive pediatric orthopedic program at William Beaumont Hospital. The
encounters generally start by meeting with physicians and the physicians are specialty
trained in pediatric orthopedics. Each physician has a subspecialty interest within pediatric
orthopedics. We generally diagnose the problem, then outline a treatment plan and then we
implement the treatment plan. Sometimes the treatment plan involves surgery and sometimes
it involves non-surgical treatments. I see all the conditions that affect children from
trauma, sports injuries, lots of congenital problems like club feet, dislocated hips and
some other more unusual congenital abnormalities. We really cover all bases when it comes to
helping a patient recover from either surgery or illness. we have every sub-specialist,
as well as all the answer support including psychological therapy, play therapy, physical
therapy, occupational therapy, speech language therapy. So everything can be addressed. There
are major differences between children and adults. Your patient, as a pediatric orthopedic
surgeon, isnt just the patient that is receiving care, you are taking care of an
entire family, so you have to involve the parents, sometimes both sets of them, both
sets of grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles and treat that whole patient as a family unit,
so that everyone is comfortable with the management decisions that are made for the child themselves.
I have always been interested in taking care of children and I think it is a real privilege
to do be able to do this and you know its a very unique thing that we do and it impacts
patients for the rest of their lives and we are there to establish very long term relationships
with people and if you do something well a child or an adolescent or young adult, they
will benefit from that for the rest of their lives and that is very unique when it comes
to medical specialties. I really enjoy taking care of kids. I enjoy being a father and I
have four children of my own. Its been fun, children are fun, they keep you young
and its what makes this not seem like work, its enjoyable. I think parents should seriously
consider bringing their kids to Beaumont because we truly offer the most advanced techniques
in the state. The facilities are second to none and the team approach is very, very effective
safe and efficient and I think that translates into better results, fewer complications and
more effective treatment.
