In the fall I started working as
a conference interpreting intern at the State Department.
I was incredibly lucky.
They say the stars aligned for me
because the South Korean president made a state visit
to the White House when I was there.
I was assigned to President Lee's daughter.
I was at the official state luncheon and state dinner.
I got to see President Obama, Michelle Obama,
and President Lee and Mrs. Kim.
I really like that MIIS is a small community,
it almost feels like you’re being tutored in groups
because the classes are very small.
Practically, I felt very prepared after school
to go out there and interpret.
The interpreting experience was not very different
from what we practiced in class.
Also the practicum class was very helpful
in that I had a chance to organize an entire forum
and work with assigning interpreters
and see how the big picture goes into play.
Starting mid-December, I’m going back
to the Department of State as an
in-house contractor for a few days a week.
I actually did apply to the Department of State
before I got into MIIS and
it didn’t work out then
so there must have been something great that happened here.
