Is it bad to bite your nails and eat them?
It is bad if you want your manicurist to like you. Though the fashion nail industry would
like you.
Why?
Guaranteed market for the glue on nail industry.
Let’s assume fashion isn’t the driving factor. Is it bad for me?
Are you cleaning your nails before you put them in your mouth?
No, not really.
So all the gunk and grime under your nails now ends up in your stomach. All the dirt
and bacteria trapped under there gets into your digestive tract.
And makes you sick.
It isn’t a guarantee, but do you really want to take that risk?
Will biting them make them grow faster?
Hair and nails grow at the same rate as they normally do. Cutting them more often won’t
make them grow faster, just seem to grow faster.
Is it a bad habit?
Yes, but then you have to wonder about the habit that would replace it. For example,
smokers sometimes replace the cigarette in their mouth with gum or food.
One is annoying, while the other is why most ex-smokers gain a lot of weight.
And other people think that seeing you bite your nails is annoying, though not as bad
as chewing gum or twirling your hair.
Can it damage your nails?
If you keep biting off cuticles and damaging the underlying tissue, it can. It can damage
your teeth, too, because they are grinding against each other as you bite the nails down.
What should I do?
Get a nail file and chew sugar-free gum, instead of literally gnawing your nails down to the
quick.
It’s cheaper than the dentist. That’s for sure.
It is also less stress on the rest of your body. Though I might recommend stress relief
instead of just looking for a replacement habit.
But unemployment is more stressful than my job.
