Hello, ZDRST-vwe-TIA. I am Kalyn. I'm also an Olympic swimmer from the 2004 Athens Summer
Games. Today, I'm an analyst at DIA and here's
DIA's Digital Dossier on Sochi, Russia and the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
More than 300,000 people of diverse religious and ethnic backgrounds make up Sochi's population.
Walking down the streets of Sochi, you would see Russians, Armenians, Turks, Christians
and Muslims, among many others. Sochi and the Olympic Park are located along
the coast of the Black Sea near the Caucasus Mountains.
Sochi is Russia's largest resort city. You've probably heard some discussion about security
at the Olympics. The Caucasus mountain region has for centuries been a focal point of ethnic
and religious conflict. In recent weeks just 400 miles from Sochi,
radical Islamists from Chechnya and other North Caucus republics have claimed responsibility
for a number of terrorist attacks, which has heightened security concerns. In response,
Russian President Vladimir Putin is deploying more than 50,000 police and soldiers to protect
the games, the biggest security apparatus in Olympic history.
We hope you enjoyed this quick look at Sochi. From all of us at DIA, thanks for watching
and GO TEAM USA!
