Thank you! Thank you!
Welcome to Employer Idol.
I'm your host Brian Oceanside,
coming to you from the E-TRAC Studios
where employees from around the country have gathered
to show that they have the skills employers want!
Tonight, you will cast your vote for the person you think
is doing all the right things on the job...
the person who should be chosen the next EMPLOYER IDOL!
Last week, America voted to eliminate Will B. Prompt,
who could juggle multiple tasks without dropping one.
Unfortunately, Will had a tough time taking criticism.
We wish Will the best of luck!
That leaves three finalists.
I know you can't wait to see what makes them stand out as employees
but first I'd like to introduce our judges.
Leading the charge is Andy Johnson,
one of the country's foremost job coaches and employer extraordinaire.
Andy has trained hundreds of top employees, including Ima Goodworker, Employee of the Year
at Wannajob Manufacturing
who was recently promoted to supervisor.
What's up Dawg? I can't wait to get this competition goin'.
Bring...it...on!
Love that enthusiasm!
Now let's welcome our own Beauty and the Beast.
Who could forget Joy Atwork, owner of Let Me Help Consulting.
Joy has spent the last five years helping workers
solve workplace conflicts so everyone can get along!
Joy, thanks for joining us.
Bryan, I'm delighted to be here.
It's always inspiring to meet such great workers.
Oh please. Let's cut the love fest and get on with it.
Ahhhh. I see we've woken the Beast, Samuel Scowl.
Don't let his crankiness fool you.
His advice is always right on!
Let's get this moving. I'm ready to be underwhelmed.
On that positive note, I'd like to introduce our first finalist.
Yul Succeed has just finished his first week at Industries R Us
and has already had to dance around some sensitive issues
even though the ink on his security ID is hardly dry!
Welcome Yul!
Wow! That was impressive!
It's hard to believe you were on your feet all day!
As you can see, Yul can really bust a move!
And, he knows how to work too!
His manager reports that Yul is a hard worker
who always dresses appropriately.
He also gets to work a few minutes early
so he's ready to start working when his shift begins.
Yul, you've only been on the job for a week.
Why should you be the next Employer Idol?
Well, I spent a lot of time getting ready.
I laid out my clothes the night before
and I had a plan for getting to work.
I even had a back-up plan! I did not want to risk being late!
Excellent! Starting a new job can be overwhelming and confusing.
It's important to make the right impression.
Well, you nailed it dude. You nailed it!
What else did you do? Gimme the details!
Well, I focused on five things.
I listened carefully. I asked questions.
I watched how things were being done
and I asked for help when I needed it
and made sure I understood what my employer expected.
I'm intrigued. Do you think your employer noticed?
I know he has.
He's told me several times that I'm exactly
the kind of employee he wants on his team.
I want to be known as a professional.
I am very proud of my work.
Samuel, you've been too quiet.
Is there anything you want to add?
Yul, you seem to have it all together.
I assume you didn't go to the employee orientation.
No way!
I attended every orientation activity that my supervisor arranged.
And I'm I glad I did!
It helped me understand the company
and I got to meet other new employees.
I also got my employee handbook.
It's been a terrific resource.
[Laugh] Nice response Yul. That was a trick question.
You're pretty light on your feet.
Samuel, that was terrible! You shouldn't try to trick people!
I bet there's an employment policy
that says you can't harass people like that.
Actually, there is. I've read my employee handbook several times.
Figuring out the unwritten rules has been a little tricky
but I haven't tripped up yet!
Yul certainly set the bar high.
Now, let's meet Mark Workswell!
Could he be the next Employer Idol?
Good luck Mark! The stage is yours.
Mark! That was amazing. AMAZING!
You outshone some serious competition to get here.
Your manager at Kenny's Diner says you're a great employee.
You're flexible, you're honest and you have a positive attitude.
He also said your uniform is always clean
and that you treat your coworkers and customers with respect.
Kenny also says you've never missed a day of work
or even been late since you started!
That's quite an accomplishment.
Well, thanks. I work hard.
I don't get involved in office politics and I also follow all policies.
I figure if Kenny has taken the time to write them down,
I should pay attention!
Well done! Let's see what our judges have to say. Samuel?
Well I can't believe that everyday is a picnic at Kenny's.
That's just not realistic.
Don't you ever run into conflicts?
Well you're right. Conflicts can happen.
Sometimes people just don't get along, you know.
When I disagree with a coworker or my supervisor,
I try to talk about the situation calmly, just between us.
That's exactly what I tell my clients to do.
Take a step back and look at the situation objectively.
If you've made a mistake, accept responsibility and apologize.
Most important, try to understand
the other person's perspective
and don't try to get people to take sides.
Once you agree on a solution
that everyone is comfortable with, move on.
Let it go!
Dawg, I've gotta say you knocked it outta the park.
What do you think your coworkers say about working with you?
I hope they say I'm professional
and that I don't take credit for their work.
Like this one guy does. Believe me, he's not too popular.
I'm super careful about what I say at work.
What do you mean, Dude? These are your friends.
You can say anything, right?
No, some topics are off limits!
I don't talk about politics or religion
and I try to keep my personal problems to myself.
That's just way too much information to share.
Dawg, you are a rock star. No doubt.
Judges, I'm afraid we only have time for one more question. Joy?
Mark, have you learned anything about performance reviews?
Well, performance reviews used to make me anxious.
But now I kind of enjoy them.
It's a good chance to check in with my manager
and make sure I'm on track.
Plus, it's nice to hear positive things.
Your reviews are always positive?
Yeah. If my manager points out things I can improve or do differently,
I listen and try not to get defensive.
I'm not perfect but, yeah,
I think I'm the kind of person you'd want on your team.
Oh this is going to be a tough decision.
I don't know how people are going to choose the next Employer Idol.
Joy's right. This isn't an easy choice.
Mark, thanks for that moving performance.
Our last finalist is Iva Dream.
Iva's been in her job for almost a year
and has had some great experiences.
But, she's decided it's time to find a job
that lets her use her musical talents.
She plans to stay with her current employer
until a new opportunity comes along.
Welcome Iva! Take it away!
Singing: If happy little blue birds fly
beyond the rainbow, why, oh why, can't I?
That was something! Judges?
Iva, I loved it! I don't know what else to say!
It would be a crime to waste that talent.
Gosh Andy, thanks.
You know, I still enjoy my job at the library
but it's hard to resist belting out "So Long, Farewell,"
every time someone leaves.
It's not a good idea to do that in a library.
I don't want to reach a point where my supervisor's unhappy.
That's definitely not going to help my career.
So what's your plans for movin' on?
I've done some research into music careers
to find out what's changed since I started working at the library.
I've updated my resumé and started networking.
And I tried out for a part in "The Sound of Music"
so I can meet people who share my interest in music.
Things are humming along.
Any chance you could find a different job at the library?
Well, there's some talk that they may start a music history collection.
That might be interesting.
But, they're still talking about budget cuts so I may be laid off.
I think it's time to start looking.
So you'll leave as soon as you get a new job?
Oh no. I'll give at least two weeks notice!
My dad always told me to leave a job the way I started it.
It would be easy to fall into bad habits
but I'll work hard through my last day.
That's what professionals do.
See Samuel. Expect the best and you'll get the best!
Well done, Iva.
Thanks Joy. I'm proud of what I've accomplished. After all...I DID IT MY WAY!
Thanks Iva, that was fantastic.
Man, this has been quite a finale!
We've heard from three exceptional employees.
They all have what it takes to be the next Employer Idol.
Judges, what do you have to say?
Frankly, I'm speechless. All three were phenomenal.
I don't know what to say.
I say we end the show now before Samuel says anything else!
I couldn't agree more.
Who do you think is the Employer Idol?
Is it Yul who danced his way through his first week
thanks to a positive attitude and good preparation?
Or Mark who knows how to tune out distractions and focus on his work?
Or Iva who has a song in her heart and a new career in her future?
It's up to you!
Cast your vote NOW for the next...
EMPLOYER...IDOL!
