In my independent study, I wrote a large paper
about the four major environmental issues
we're facing today.
Which was the pollution of the commons,
pollution, climate change, and food security.
What we did was we went in and broke apart
how people are currently talking about these issues.
Is it "doom and gloom,"
or is it "we can make a change."
And we went back and we re-wrote it.
So what I did is I went back and I found
So if it's someone talking about,
like "Oh these problems are so terrible,"
no one is going to want to jump on board.
these issues, and I re-wrote them to be
exciting and innovative and attractive,
so people will want to help make a difference
and not be so scared of change.
Now we want to focus on the specifics of
environmental ethics as you begin
to investigate a career path
that addresses workable, practical solutions
to what you see as the problems of
environmental degradation.
If I'm going into the field to make a difference,
I need to understand the complexities of the field.
If I'm communicating a message
about the environment that's going
to turn people away, it's going to be
a snowball effect, it's just going to
get worse and worse and worse.
And I think that we're at a loss in our
own country to where for some reason
because it's legal we feel it's
okay to pollute the commons.
As I was saying, in that documentary,
"The Yes Men," you know, it's okay
for a few people at the top to make bad news.
But I'm kind of on the other side where
I want to get a lot of people at the bottom to make good news.

I'm graduating with a future.
Do something bigger altogether.
